poem: curativo

(for Lisa)

at first, as you rip open, you will bleed and hurt. my darling, it won’t be easy, throbbing with each broken beat.

words catch in your raw throat, choking with every shallow breath, remembering the transgressions, hot lava creeping into your veins.

slowly, the aching grows duller, body mending itself little by little, spirit picking up the pieces one by one, tears coming a little less with each sunrise.

days will become brighter, happier. nights less inky and interminable. the smile you thought was lost will return, a beautiful beacon, a sign.

finally, your eyes will be clear and fixed on the hopeful horizon, painted in blue, imagining a fantastic phoenix extend its red feathers and take flight.
