Okay I know I worked in a bike shop so I'm kind of biased, but OKAY it's the law here that you have to wear a helmet to ride a bike. And they're trying to scrap that law, to encourage more people to ride their bikes instead of taking cars. Which is the stupidest idea I've ever heard??? They want to encourage more people to cycle and not wear helmets?? Do you know what happens if a cyclist gets hit by a car (which is SUPER OFTEN BTW, both at fault of cyclists and cars not obeying road rules) and the cyclist isn't wearing a helmet, a bad collision would easily mean the cyclist will hit they head on the road. Meaning? HEAD INJURY. Like u know, SOMETIMES FATAL HEAD INJURIES. When I was working in the bike shop, I met a couple of riders who had been hit by cars, and they all said said things along the lines of they avoided serious head injuries because they were wearing a helmet. So it fucking baffles me that a political party are trying to pass a law that would encourage more cyclists, that would put people at risk to serious injury if they didn't wear a helmet? (Like let's face it, so many people hate wearing helmets, so if it was only ~optional~ no one would) So many people could get seriously hurt because of it. And I just oh my god why would you do that, I know that everyone thinks helmets are dorky, but why would you want to encourage people to not give a shit about head protection in an area where you actually need it? What next, they pitch making hard hats on construction sites optional??? Oh my god our government (deep sigh) look encourage people to ride bikes, I'm all about that, but helmets are so fucking important.
