Chat I wanna change my name
Something like the cool ones like Worm or Pepsi, y'know??? Please tell me what name you think suits me because like hmmmmm 👀
Names are a really tricky thing to figure out as a nonbinary, and it took me YEARS to find a system that works for me; so I'm gonna share my system just in case it's helpful for anyone.
My first name is gender neutral, which is perfect in affirming spaces, however--just like they/them pronouns--people tend to interpret neutral names in the way they prefer. So if someone thinks I'm a woman they're going to interpret the name femininely, same in the masc direction (which is good for me cause I'm masc, but the point still stands). This interpretation means that cis people misgender me a lot, and trans people don't necessarily know unless I'm flashing a bunch of other trans signals their way. Because of this, I use my first name with people I know: family, friends, coworkers.
My last name is exclusively a masculine name. It cannot be interpreted femininely. I do get many ignorant comments from people who mention some woman they know who goes by a masc name as of it's some feminist move I'm making, but for the most part, It does what it's supposed to; it gives people pause. They see someone who they (honestly really fucking stupidly, seriously, nobody who knows me sees me this way) see as a woman, and they hear a masculine name, so it forces them to pause and think. It also get's their attention for when people use neutral or masculine pronouns for me. But, because it's my last name, I have a shield from the transphobes. When people are affirming, that's great! But when people immediately come at me with hostile judgement, I get to brush it off as my last name and they immediately calm down. I use my last name for strangers: costumers, protest colleagues, anywhere I have to give a name to order something, random people who start conversations at the bus, customer service representatives, etc. Literally anyone I won't see on a regular basis.
My names are obviously a very personal experience, and most people won't have the same conditions, but I thought I would share the logic behind my naming rituals in case it gives anyone else ideas for themself. And hey, maybe someone else will be in the same position as me? Who knows!
Elizabethan would actually be a sick nonbinary name
Nonbinary person named Stevelyn
I have a cousin whose birth name is Moss. He's a chill dude but I'm mad at him because I'M the gay cousin. He had the AUDACITY to take the coolest nonbinary name and completely squander it by being cisgender. I wanted that name.
I should turn him trans so I can steal it. I'm gonna start anonymously sending him Will Wood music and coding tutorials.
hhhhhh Fiasco is such a good nonbinary name
