In the novelization, while everyone on Takodana assumes the exploding planets are instead stars going supernova, Finn already knows it was the Hosnian system and done by the First Order. Well, Han suspects otherwise, but Finn runs up and confirms.

Yes in the novel it is Finn who confirms what has happened. But his knowledge makes no sense unless he’s Force sensitive, because all that is visible is some bright lights in the sky that could be anything. And from Hux’s conversation with Snoke it seems that the First Order wasn’t planning on using the weapon yet, so even if Finn sees some lights in the sky he has no reason to suspect that the Starkiller was used.
Not unless he felt those people die.
I think he’s felt people die through the Force before, namely at Tuanul. So he knows what it feels like.
Now if you take Finn knowing the feeling of people dying and him re-experiencing it on Takodana, combined with his knowledge of Starkiller Base and the lights he sees in the sky, suddenly his conclusion becomes very logical. But without that extra bit, it makes no sense at all.
