Egotober Day 1: Box

The box was leaking. It was something that Chase could tell almost as soon as it had been set in front of him, and it was a fact he wished he could ignore. The sharp metallic scent of blood filled the air making it hard to pretend that the red dripping from the box was anything else. His mind tried to ignore the blood, focusing instead on the details on the box. It was from a local cake shop, he remembered getting a similar one when they had gotten his son’s birthday cake two years ago.
He glanced up from the box at the creature that had brought it. Green eyes stared back at him grinning, “Aww come on Chase no appetite? Don’t be rude now, made it just for you.” Chase looked back down at the box, mostly to avoid making more eye contact with the creature. It was clear the creature wasn’t going to go away until he ate whatever was in the box. Honestly he was surprised that the other seemed so patient, it was normally not a quality that the creature had in their encounters but he supposed he shouldn’t push his luck. He opened the box up slowly, holding his breath at what might be hidden inside.
Once the lid was fully open the smell of blood got stronger, but there was also this sweet smell that came with it, like it really was a cake in the box. He glanced at the creature again just a second, clearly unsure what was going on before looking back down. It was a cake. Chase found himself more surprised that there was really a cake in the box. It was a white cake that looked like it had been drenched in blood, to the point it was almost a miracle that the frosting seemed like it was mostly intact and not melting off. The only really disturbing thing other than all the blood was the eyes that had been stuck into the cake.
He stared at the cake a moment before looking between it and the creature watching him. “You…made this?” Chase asked, sounding unsure of what he was seeing. Though at this point he didn’t know why he was surprised, the creature haunting and tormenting him could bake, or at least partly decorated a cake to further torment him.
“I did, do you like it?” The way the creature said it made it very clear that the only response Chase could say was yes. “Eat.” As patient as the creature was, it was clear it was getting fed up with waiting. He grabbed the fork next to him and hesitantly took a bite of the cake, making sure to avoid the eyes stuck in the frosting.
The cake was surprisingly good, making him shocked. Sure the metallic taste of the blood was hard to get past but the cake itself was surprisingly sweet. His own surprise in the cake being edible made him not realize that the creature had gotten closer to him. It wasn’t until an eye was pressed to his mouth that Chase registered that it was right next to him.
“Eat it.” The creature’s form buzzed next to him, making Chase’s hair stand on edge feeling the energy that rolled off it. He wanted to say no, to move away, but he already knew that would end much worse than just eating the damn eye. He opened his mouth and the eye was shoved in almost as soon as he opened it. The slimy texture made him want to gag but the creature had covered his mouth to keep him from spitting it out. He bit down almost gagging again at the texture of it exploding in his mouth before swallowing it. He almost gagged again but the creature forced his head back keeping him from being able to throw up.
“Good job.” It praised looking down at Chase with amusement before finally letting him go, and before he could react the creature was finally gone leaving him alone to process whatever that last visit was.
