Yall, this is something I've been thinking about for awhile and I wanted to talk about it. Excuse my lack of knowledge on the subject.   

I was recently in the process of buying a car. Now, having a big boy job and the trappings that come with it have given me the ability to maybe get myself something a little nicer than my current truck I've had for years, which is still very nice. When people find out you're getting a new car, everyone has their input. "You should get a ________." And this was good, for awhile. I don't know much about cars other than if I look at it and I like it, so I got a chance to listen to a lot of different people on the subject, and one trend I noticed pervaded most of the discussions:

"Buy European."

Over and over again.

I'm getting the impression buying a fast European entry-level sedan is how young professionals like myself announce to the world that they are successful,  the undisputed sign of doin' it and doin' it well.

It's just amazing to me that if you wanted to buy a car in the entry-level luxury segment, buying foreign is the norm and buying domestic is the out there decision. What? What other product on the face of the earth is like that? 

And I think this is symptomatic of something larger that disappoints me. I'll admit, I wasn't alive. But I have heard and seen a time when the way you automotively (word?) flexed your financial muscle was buying a big, gorgeous, comfy Cadillac with red leather interior. Something from the Motor City you could be proud of because your fellow Americans built it. And if you were wild, if you were young, if you extinguished your cigarettes in near-empty longnecks of Old Style on your nightstand, blasted Sticky Fingers on your radio and made out with the prom queen at the top of High's Point, you drove a Mustang. A Barracuda. A Chevelle. A Firebird. You wanted unapologetic, raw power that was good for two things: Lookin' good and drivin' fast. If you wanted a fast car I gather that all you could get was American up until the mid-70's, but it didn't matter, because they were so good. It seems like a lot changed. American cars started to disappoint. We got a little lazy. Foreign competitors could provide equal or better quality and reliability at lower price. More American dream for your money with the tradeoff that you get a Toyota badge up front, and people line(d) up with checkbooks in hand.  This makes me feel two things. The first is sadness. I don't want it to be this way. I've grown up thinking America is the greatest, without equivocation or question. Everything we make is the best there is. Everything we do is the right thing to do. It's not like that as much anymore.

But it's not all bad. The second feeling I get from this is hunger. Rumbling, unsatisfied hunger. I've dreaming a little bit of what it would be like for American automotives to be world-renowned, the object of affection everywhere. I want to see a day where they're all about Chevy in London. I want to see yuppie guys skip the BMW dealership and head straight for where they can get a 5.0L V8 Hemi under the hood that just SCREAMS and doesn't care who knows it. And I think we could. I think Detroit has come out of a really bad time and is leaner and meaner than they've been in decades, and really are building some great cars. That's what I'm hoping for. I don't dislike that foreign manufacturers are making great cars, far from it. It took years of absolutely handing our butts to us for us to realize that we've got to do better. I just want to see a time where it's not as easy a choice to pick foreign engineering over something we did right here.
