š£ Check your Release Radar for AI songs
TL;DRāI've noticed that AI generated tracks have appeared under established artists. Here's how to spot fake AI music on Spotify:
Has the artist made a comeback? (And are they still alive?) No (ā): That track is likely AI generated. Yes (ā ): That track is likely legit.
Does the track sound similar to their other music? What about the album art? No (ā): That track is likely AI generated, UNLESS the artist has explicitly stated they're trying something different. Yes (ā ): That track is likely legit.
Was there any announcement about a new release? No (ā): That track is likely AI generated, UNLESS the artist has a habit of dropping new music unexpectedly. Yes (ā ): That track is likely legit.
If you suspect that an AI generated track has been wrongfully attributed to your favorite artist, tell Spotify that it violates their Deceptive Content policy. Report it via their chat feature.
I got really excited yesterday because it looked like one of my favorite artists (Bohnes) dropped a new track. Imagine my surprise when I played it and it sounded like phonk, not alt rock.
But Bohnes hasn't announced any new music. Plus, the album art for this new track looks nothing like their existing discography:
Apparently this has been talked about on Reddit before: dead artists have had AI generated music attributed to them without permission. According to 404 Media, a spokesperson for Spotify said that this kind of thing violates their Deceptive Content policy.
And this wasn't the only track I noticed on my release radar. There was also one attributed to Foreign Figures (which has released three singles this year, the most recent being "Gated" on August 15):
Again with the phonk sound and anime-style cover art for an alt rock group.
Thankfully, Spotify took down this track quickly after I reported them. Now this is all you see when you search for "Next Train" by Foreign Figures:
However, at the time of writing this post, "No Better Place" by Bohnes is still available to listen to.
No matter what happens, it's worth reporting to give your favorite artists a heads-up.
