Saw a poll posted on bluesky, and now I'm curious.
The setup: Each person on earth capable of understanding the stakes and the setup are put into a room, alone. They are presented two buttons, and must press one button. Assume you are not able to talk to anyone ahead of time.
Button A: If more than 50% of button presses are button A, anyone pressing button B dies.
Button B: If more than 50% of button presses are button B, nothing happens.
And to restate this (because it does make a difference in how it sounds):
Button A: You survive, regardless of anyone else's choices.
Button B: If more than 50% of button presses are button A, you and everyone else who pressed button B die.
Which button do you press?

The wind blows, slightly, and the strand is pulled upwards in the draft.
A truly enormous spider, the size of a large dog, was hanging on the strand, just below the line of the window. Physics says the strand cannot remotely hold it aloft, but the spider does not care. After a moment, it looks back at her through the window. She seems unperturbed as she locks eyes with it.
It drifts onward, and eventually, past where she can see it from the window.

Tabletop RPG with an old school "you can die during character creation" lifepath system, except most of the disqualifying events are stuff like "made it to adulthood with no major traumas" or "discovered a love of carpentry", so your actual goal is to make just enough bad life decisions that your character is a big enough loser to become an adventurer.
Starting out in a coastal community is regarded by some as an optimal choice because if you have the bad luck to end up happily married you can make a saving throw to see if your spouse is subsequently eaten by a whale.
Wouldn't any location let you do a save to see if they die a premature and violent death?
Often, yes, but "eaten by a whale" gives the biggest bonus by a substantial margin when checking to see whether you develop a revenge complex.
Listen. I don't usually build revenge complex characters, because I find the archetype kind of narrow usually, but I did once roll up a character who had 87.5% of her village wiped out by plague, including all three of her siblings, and her one surviving parent, at 13. I had seven starting trauma.
Started session one Pactbound, and already Codependent with her Benefactor. Could barely function as a person, but the modifiers to preventing and curing disease were stupid.
