Into the Rabbit Hole with Young Kapampangan Musicians Forestille

I first heard of and met Forestille during my interview with Eksena Lokal. These college kids took to the booth before I did, talking with wit about their experiences of living, studying and making music in Pampanga. Bonus points: Their music reminds me of dreamy 90′s alt rock.

Here they are displaying that same wit answering a few questions that I sent.

1. Who are your members, what instruments do each of you play, and where in Pampanga are you from?

Forestillle consists of Morissey Racca who plays guitar, sings, and does a little bit of synths, AJ Garde who plays guitar, Chad Buco who plays the bass, and Jr Mapa who plays the drums.

2. How did your love for music start?

Morissey: Well, I guess it all started when I was a kid. I grew up in a family where both of my parents are musically inclined and musicians as well. They used to own cassette tapes of their favorite bands like Nirvana, Led Zep, The Smiths, The Beatles, etc. So, whenever they play those cassettes I got to listen to them. So, I guess it all started early on and my fondness for music grew over time.

AJ: It also started when I was just a little boy; that time, my mom always listened to the radio - from oldies music to 90’s. But my music taste evolved when I was in grade 5, from hip hop to metal to rock -- but I never knew I’ll end up being in a band!

Chad: I remember when I was in grade, I was always listening to Linkin Park and Blink 182 at that time so I guess that’s how it all started, even now!

Jr: I started playing drums when I was in elementary and by that time I began to explore different genres so that’s where my love for music started.

3. How would you describe your music?

Honestly, that’s one of the most difficult questions, if not the hardest, we could ever encounter. We can’t label our music (or rather we won’t) and give it a concrete genre because honestly we hate labeling things. We just play and write the sound(s) inside our heads. I guess we just leave it up to the people to describe us if they ever intend or bother to. We’re not forcing ourselves to think of (a) description(s) for our band and sound. All we know is that what we do is meaningful for us, everything about this band, us, our gears, our gigs, and our sound.

4. Where in Pampanga do usually you practice?

Different jamming studios in Angeles City but mostly we spend our time practicing at Jr’s place at San Fernando or at Aj’s place in Magalang, but we usually just slack off, eat, and play Xbox instead whenever we’re in Aj’s house.

5. Do you have day jobs or do you play music full time?

Some of us are still College students, but all of us already experienced having a day job.

6. What are your families' reactions to your being in a band?

Morissey: They know I play in a band and I can say that they are somewhat supportive. My dad used to play in a band when he was in high school so he gets me, but not all the time.

AJ: They are happy I’m in a band, and I can also say they are supportive but sometimes they ask if we’re getting paid or do we have a talent fee for playing. I guess they don’t get that I do this because this is my passion.

Chad: At first they didn’t understand why I keep playing even though we’re not getting paid for it but eventually they saw our love for music. It’s all about passion. This is our everything.

Jr: They are also supportive since my uncle also loves to play music.
