Forest

For me there is nothing like a forest to literally bring you back to Earth.  

Imagine for a moment stepping into a forest.  You take a deep breathe and you can smell the earth, feel it’s dampness.  The trees around you reach for the sky, but they also reach into the ground.  Under the surface of that moist soil is a system of roots that grows into the earth and clings to it.  A tree knows that while it needs the sun, it needs the earth.  And so the roots grow, deep into the earth, collecting the nutrients from the soil around it.  

And so, I imagine sometimes I am that tree.  I’m in the middle of the forest, there is a patch of sun shining through the leaves.  I smell the moss, I feel the damp comfort of earth, and I reach into it, binding myself to the ground.  I see my leaves reaching up towards the sunshine and the new growth it brings, while my legs grow downward, binding me to the earth so that I won’t fall.  

And most days, that is all it takes to stop the world around me from moving so fast.
