Advent Calendar Day 2: Forever Rose by Hilary Mckay

I typed out this long fucking post about how much I loved the unconventional bohemian art family in this book series but how much I hated the bad parenting and the compulsory heterosexuality upon rereading as an adult. However, tumblr ate it and we just found out that we have cockroaches and I don’t feel like typing it up again so here’s a bullet points version

Bill Casson is a shit dad. He’s never there and he negs the women in his life and I hate that happily ever after involves him coming home after being a dick the whole series.

The Casson children are perfect and I love love love how half the people who are family aren’t blood relations. Formative influence

Michael is great but he and Caddy shouldn’t have ended up together because you don’t have to marry someone just because you have a baby with them and your family loves him. She also seems to love him but I wish we’d seen more of her feeling that way rather than her family.

Finding out Caddy and Michael had a baby literally made me feel like a proud aunt. Rereading childhood favorites is a trip.

Buttercup was a perfect Baby Jesus. Caddy (hastily dressed as an extra angel and hovering at the side of the stage) need not have been there at all. I think he may grow up to be a very talented actor because although it was quite a simple thing he had to do, just lie nicely on somme hay, he managed it very well indeed. Class 1 had just as simple things to o, but they didn’t manage themm half as well. The Wise Men had to be asked in front of everyone to settle down and leave the presents alone. And we will need a new donkey next year. With stronger ears.

None of that really mattered though. The only truly important thing was that it was nearly Christmas, and Buttercup had arrived in time to be Baby Jesus. He was there when I got home and I had no problem persuading Caddy to lend him to me.

“He is used to being worshipped,” she said, and in no time at all we were all rushing back to school together. Mummy and Caddy and Michael and Saffy and Sarah and David and Indigo, too. All of us except Daddy, whom we completely forgot. He arrived a little late, when everyone was sitting down, and the recorders were taking enormous breaths, about to start the Overture.

Miss Furley recognised him.

”We must find you a seat near the front!” she cried, loud enouh for the whole school to hear and abandoning her raffle tickets in her excitement. “Recorders! One moment please while we find a place for Baby Jesus’s grandad!”

”I beg—“ began Daddy, but what he begged was never heard because the recorder players found they could hold their breaths no longer and the “Sans Day Carol” erupted almost simultaneously from both sides of the stage. I turned round to smile at Daddy and he looked like he had been hit on the head with something hard.

Although so did quite a lot of the audience so perhaps it was only the music.

Indigo and Rose Casson from the Casson Family book series are autistic. Indigo has a special interest in artic exploration. Rose stims by eating paint and can be very blunt.

Also Caddy has ADHD inattentive subtype.

These are delightfully charming books for readers of all ages, and if you love to be swept into a world where you never want to leave, I’d recommend these books. They’re about a whimsical family of artists, and the children are all named after paint colors, and the characters are so real and lovable that you’ll want to be adopted straight into their world. I love these books so much that my username on this site has been permanentrose for nearly ten years now, and I don’t think I’ll ever change it.

I love these new covers so much! I honestly can’t decide if I like them better than these ones. Such lovely cover art - I truly wish I owned either one of these in box set.
