A wonderful thing about this craft is being able to make beautiful and functional works of art from simple chunks of steel and rusty iron. It gives me hope for the rough patches in life. We can always be cleaned up, stacked with a higher quality steel and re-forged into something amazing. The process invigorates and inspires me. This particular knife is quite a challenge. There is a lot of material isolation and material movement that needs to happen to get this shape. On top of the the balance needs to be right and that is tricky to get the ring thick enough but not too big. It's realky easy to over grow the handle as well and you really have to watch out for that creep. The blade requires distal taper from the ball grip all the way to the tip. I forge that in. Usually I forge even closer to shape than this but with the wrought iron jacket so thick I had to leave it a little on the thick side. I will know soon if I was able to keep the 1075 core centered and thick enough to provide a decent edge. It's a constant journey to master something like this and I am just scratching the surface. The integral ball shaped palm grip is a challenge I have yet to get right.
