It's one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself, to forgive. Forgive everybody.
Maya Angelou
“When you initially forgive, it is like letting go of a hot iron. There is initial pain and the scars will show, but you can start living again.”
I learned a long time ago that some people would rather die than forgive. It's a strange truth, but forgiveness is a painful and difficult process. It's not something that happens overnight. It's an evolution of the heart.
Sometimes we don’t forgive people because they deserve it. We forgive them because they need it, because we need it, and because we cannot let go and move forward without it.
Dwelling on past bad decisions you’ve made only allows those decisions to keep defining you. Forgive yourself and move on.
Forgiving someone doesn't mean that we condone their behaviour. The act of forgiveness takes place in our own mind. It really has nothing to do with the other person. The reality of true forgiveness lies in setting ourselves free from holding on to the pain. It's simply an act of releasing ourselves from the negative energy.
I forgive myself, and then I move on. You can sit there forever, lamenting about how bad you've been, feeling guilty until you die, and not one tiny slice of that guilt will do anything to change a single thing in the past.
Forgive yourself for not having known better. You were doing the best you could. All you can do is go on from here.
