It's come up during the course of my career that a client’s left a production company I was working for... to work with another production company.
That can happen for any number of reasons. Budget. Ego. A change in corporate leadership. Simple competition.
I also, on a number of occasions, had the opportunity to see what the next producer or production company did.
I won't lie. It’s a bit like seeing your ex with their new romantic interest.
Here’s the thing, though: I never once looked at another production company’s work on something I used to do... and thought they'd done a better job. Not even as good a job.
That’s not just on me, by the way. There’s an entire production crew prior to my efforts. And I happen to work with a lot of quite talented professionals.
So yeah. I never looked at the next production company and thought they did a better job than we did. And you might be inclined to think Good. Serves the client right.
My thought is, if the client's not gonna work with us... they should work with someone better. They should take whatever we've been doing to the next level.
I actually think my ego can accept that turn of events.
What I have a hard time with... is when a former client moves on to something less.
Which is completely. Disappointing.
Because I can also see in those less-than efforts what that work could've been.
And how it should’ve been so much better.
