WILD STYLE A HIP HOP MUSEUM
WILD STYLE: MoHipHop Studio, CHRIS CORNELIUS
As a culture, Hip Hop was first introduced to mass audiences with the film “Wild Style” in 1983. The culture assembled around Hip Hop music, graffiti art, and break dancing; all originating in New York at this time. It is regarded as a truly American-born art form.
SNAFU (Situation Normal All Fucked Up) is an archi- tectural drawing meant to synthesize the subjective qualities of a culture. This collage advances earlier analysis of music and dance with the study of graffiti art. It generated a language for form generation, and ultimately the museum.
The form studies were generated using the shape language created within the SNAFU. They were assembled using some of the poetic techniques of artists, such as sampling: taking small elements from another songs and organizing them into a composition to create anew.
ANALYSIS TO FORM
The museum form was derived from a unique process in which we analyzed a chronology of Hip Hop songs from the 1979-2000.
Models translated observations of poetic elements in Hip Hop songs using found components. We then drafted plans and sections of each model as a basis for a graphic language.
We expanded on the graphic language by layering the model plans and sections. Then, reading them only as graphics, we extracted aspects to compose intuitive abstracts (green and purple - final page).
Lofting shapes from the abstracts we created digital forms. These forms were combined and manipulated to compose a relief model.
These alternating process from graphic to physical were the same method used from SNAFU to museum form. It also provided much of the content for the final iteration.
