Formula One's winter break always felt deceptively short.
On paper, it lasted a couple of months – just enough time to recover from nearly a year of constant travel, back-to-back race weekends, media appearances, and endless flights.
In reality, it was a blur of training camps, sponsor commitments, family visits, and desperately trying to squeeze in a little normal life before everything started again. Drivers disappeared from the paddock for a few precious weeks, only to return in February looking just a little different. Some came back with fresh haircuts, others sporting new tattoos or questionable facial hair. A few arrived noticeably leaner after doubling down on their fitness.
And then there was Ollie, who somehow managed to spend one winter accidentally transforming himself into something that looked suspiciously like an overgrown teddy bear.
It started with one extra serving at dinner. Then another.
Then his trainer casually mentioned that if he was going to be spending most of the off-season in the gym anyway, he might as well take advantage of it.
"A bit more muscle won't hurt," they'd said. Ollie had shrugged and agreed. Somewhere along the way, though, "a bit more muscle" turned into noticeably broader shoulders, thicker arms, and a chest that made half of his hoodies fit just a little tighter than before.
Not that he noticed.
He was too busy enjoying home-cooked meals, lifting heavier than ever, and forgetting to book a haircut.
By the time January rolled around, the sides had grown out enough to soften his features, and the curls at the back of his head had started brushing the nape of his neck. It wasn't long – not even close – but it had become fluffier, fuller, impossible to keep perfectly neat.
Every morning he flattened it with his hands. Every afternoon it puffed back up.
Every photo made him look increasingly…
Bear-like.
"You've gotten... bigger."
Ollie looked up from tying his trainers, eyebrows lifting in confusion. "Bigger?"
You walked over, planting your hands on his shoulders before giving one of his biceps an experimental squeeze. "...Much bigger."
"I've put on a bit of muscle," he replied with a shrug. "A bit?" You stared at him in disbelief. He frowned, glancing down at himself. "Is it that obvious?"
You blinked at him for a second before letting out a laugh. "Ollie."
"Hm?"
"You look like you could carry a refrigerator."
His eyebrows shot up. "...Really?"
"You could probably carry me and the refrigerator." He looked genuinely surprised, as though the thought had never crossed his mind. "I don't think that's true."
"It absolutely is."
The first proper cuddle after winter break nearly ended with you laughing yourself breathless.
Normally, Ollie fit against you. This time – You bounced.
"What?" he asked, looking down at you. "You feel different." He tilted his head. "... Different how?"
You poked his chest with a finger. "It's like hugging a mattress." He looked mildly offended. "I'm not that solid."
"You are."
He wrapped an arm around you anyway. You disappeared. "Okay." He looked down at the top of your head. "...Okay what?"
"You may have become a bear."
"A bear?" His voice was full of quiet confusion.
"A very friendly one."
He rolled his eyes, already preparing to argue. "I don't think I–"
Before he could finish, you reached up and buried both hands in his hair. He froze instantly. After a beat, he glanced at you. "...What's wrong with my hair?"
"Nothing."
"It got fluffy."
"It grew."
"It got fluffy."
He let out a sheepish laugh. "I forgot to get it cut." You ruffled it harder. The curls sprang right back into place. You gasped dramatically. "Oh, that's dangerous." He gave you a puzzled look. "...Dangerous?"
"I am never going to stop touching your hair."
You didn't.
Movie nights became an excuse. Car rides became an excuse. Waiting in line for coffee somehow became an excuse.
Every single time Ollie sat next to you, your hand drifted into his hair almost automatically.
Sometimes you scratched lightly at the back of his head. Sometimes you absentmindedly combed through the soft curls with your fingers. Sometimes you just... fluffed it.
He always pretended to sigh dramatically.
"You know," he'd mumble as your fingers found his hair again, "other people use pillows."
"I am."
He snorted. "You are not."
"I've upgraded."
His hoodies stopped fitting him the same way, too.
One afternoon he pulled on an old grey sweatshirt and frowned at himself. "...Did this shrink?" You looked over from where you were sitting. "No."
"It definitely did."
"It definitely didn't."
He tugged at one sleeve before holding out his arm. "The sleeves are shorter."
"Because your arms are bigger."
He blinked. "...Oh."
"And your shoulders."
He looked down again. "...Oh."
"And your chest."
Another pause. "...Oh."
You couldn't help but smile. "You accidentally became built."
"I didn't mean to."
"I know."
He scratched the back of his neck with an embarrassed smile. "I just kept eating."
"You ate enough to feed three villages."
"I was hungry."
The paddock after winter break was even worse.
Every other person seemed to stop for half a second.
"Have you always been this big?"
"Mate, what happened to you?"
"Did you wrestle a grizzly over Christmas?"
Ollie answered every question with the same confused expression. "I just... trained?"
Someone eventually gestured toward his hair. "You growing it out?" He rubbed the back of his neck. "I forgot." The other person laughed. "You forgot?"
"I kept meaning to book a haircut."
That evening, the two of you collapsed onto the hotel bed after a long day. Without thinking, Ollie opened one arm. You immediately tucked yourself against his side. He rested his chin lightly on top of your head before speaking. "...Comfortable?"
"Mhm."
His arm tightened just a little. "Aren't I squashing you?" You shook your head. "No." He waited another moment. "...Too warm?"
"No."
"...You'd tell me?"
You smiled into the fabric of his hoodie before looking up at him. "Oliver."
"Hm?"
"You've become the perfect cuddle buddy."
A small smile tugged at his lips. "I have?"
"You are warm."
He nodded thoughtfully. "...Right."
"You are soft."
"I've got muscle," he protested.
"Covered by soft."
He gave you an exaggerated look of offense. "That's rude."
"You have fluffy hair."
He laughed quietly, unable to argue with that one. "I suppose."
"And you're basically bear-sized now."
He glanced down at himself again.
"I don't think I'm that big."
You wrapped both arms around him as far as they would go. "I can't even get all the way around you anymore."
He looked at your arms, then back at you. "...Really?"
"Mhm."
He considered that for a long moment. "... Huh." After another quiet pause, a proud little smile crept onto his face. "I guess winter was productive."
"It was."
Silence settled comfortably between you, the kind that never needed filling. The room was quiet except for the faint hum of the hotel air conditioner and the muffled sounds of traffic somewhere far below.
After a minute, Ollie shifted ever so slightly, his thumb absentmindedly tracing slow circles against your side. "So..."
You tipped your head back just enough to look at him, one eyebrow lifting. "So?"
A shy smile spread across his face, the kind that always seemed to appear before he said something he thought might be a little silly. "...Bear?"
A laugh escaped you before you could stop it. "Bear..." You let the pause linger for dramatic effect, watching him grow increasingly suspicious. "...man."
He groaned instantly. "No."
"Yes."
"That's awful."
"It's perfect."
"It was right there the whole time, wasn't it?"
"The entire winter."
He let his head fall back against the headboard with an exaggerated sigh. "I can't believe I walked into that."
"You practically sprinted into it."
"I set myself up."
"You absolutely did."
You were still giggling when he looked back down at you, unable to stop the smile tugging at his own lips despite the theatrical complaints.
"I've created a monster."
"You created a comedian."
"I don't think those are the same thing."
"They are today."
He huffed a quiet laugh through his nose before leaning down to press a lingering kiss to your forehead. When he settled back against the pillows, one arm instinctively tightened around your waist, pulling you even closer until your cheek rested comfortably against his chest.
After another moment, he mumbled into the top of your head, "...I don't mind being your Bearman."
You smiled so wide your cheeks began to ache. "I was hoping you'd say that."
He hummed softly in response, the vibration rumbling pleasantly beneath your ear. "You know," he said after a beat, "if you're going to keep calling me Bearman..."
"Oh?"
"...then I expect you to keep using me as a pillow."
You laughed, giving his side a gentle squeeze. "I was going to do that anyway."
"I thought so."
"Besides," you murmured, nestling impossibly closer, "it'd be a shame to let all this hard work go to waste."
"My hard work?"
"Mhm."
You patted his chest once before wrapping your arms around him again. "You accidentally became the world's most comfortable boyfriend."
He smiled to himself, a faint blush creeping onto his cheeks despite the dim lighting. "Accidentally."
"Completely."
Neither of you spoke after that. There wasn't really anything left to say.
His heartbeat was slow and steady beneath your ear. His hoodie still smelled faintly of laundry detergent, and his arms remained securely wrapped around you with the effortless certainty of someone who had held you a hundred times before.
Maybe the extra winter weight had disappeared eventually. Maybe his hair would get cut again. Maybe the oversized teddy bear you'd teased him about would slowly fade back into the racing driver everyone else knew.
But some things had stayed.
The broader shoulders you loved hiding behind. The warm embrace that somehow always felt like coming home. The quiet habit he had of pulling you closer without even realizing he was doing it.
Those, thankfully, seemed here to stay.
And judging by how quickly you melted into his arms every single time, you certainly weren't complaining.
a/n : i will never doubt you guys liking Ollie ever again !!
The construction of the Madrid F1 circuit (new on the 2026 calendar) is sparking protests in Spain due to the removal of hundred year old olive trees (among other reasons).
hey does anyone else ever think about how not only has an australian never stood on the podium at their home race but also no australian driver has won more than 9 races since alan jones. daniel ricciardo retired on 8 wins and mark webber retired on 9 wins and if oscar is stuck on 9 wins for the rest of his career i might actually go crazy. if he comes so far and still never manages to beat his predecessors. and does anyone else ever think about how mark webber once said that he didn't realize he was never good enough to win a championship until he met oscar. and do you guys ever think about the possibility that oscar will be a great driver and have a long career but he might never get another shot at a championship and he might never win a race again and he'll be tied with mark forever. 9 wins and 0 championships.
