Yesterday, on a beautiful day of spring, I spoke at the 50th Anniversary Conference of the Environmental Discipline of Peking University 🇨🇳. A spectacular world 🌎 class institution of scholarship & research, this university is combination of tradition and modernity. Peking University epitomizes the foundation that has unlocked great human capital in China 🇨🇳 and the world. Congratulations 👏 on the landmark milestone of major breakthroughs in the fields of environmental protection & biodiversity #ForPeopleForPlanet. I was particularly inspired by the remarkable career of Professor Tang Xiaoyan, a 91-year-old female scientist who lay the groundwork for Chinese environmental education & research. @UNinChina 🇺🇳🇨🇳 will continue to work with Chinese Government and academia to scale up national efforts to peak carbon emissions by 2030 & carbon neutrality by 2060. Thank you 🙏 Party Secretary Hao Ping & Dean Zhu Tong for your leadership. I hope one day I can go to this University as a student again. Emerging data shows that since the outbreak of COVID-19, violence against women and girls, and particularly domestic violence, has INTENSIFIED, resulting in a spike of around 30% in some countries. Less than 40% of the women who experience violence seek help of any sort. Governments and leaders must act now to: -Allocate additional resources and include evidence-based measures to address violence against women and girls in COVID-19 national response plans. -Strengthen services for women who experience violence during COVID-19 Build capacity of key services to prevent impunity and improve quality of response Put women at the centre of policy change, solutions and recovery -Ensure sex-disaggregated data is collected to understand the impact of COVID-19 on violence against women and girls and inform the response This is a turning point #ForPeopleForPlanet and together we can #TurnItAround for #GenderEquality!
