Savannah Historic District Hike-Square by Square
2/16/2014 – I found out that the Savannah Visitor Center parking lot is open and free on Sundays. It made the perfect starting point for my plans and no fees. I got a map of the historic district and decided to take a city hike. First, I had to decide which church to attend. I narrowed it down to three, but thought after Bruton Parish, no historic church could compare, and didn’t like the webpage of another, which called itself “reform” and promised a stricter interpretation of the Bible. I ended up in the right place-St George’s community was wonderful-they wouldn’t let me leave without staying for a chat and some refreshments.
Old Savannah is organized by squares. Some contain monuments or plaques, but most are just micro-parks in the heart of the city. So my plan was to crisscross the district, walking to each square in a two square mile area, and add in Forsyth Park and Colonial Cemetery. It rivaled my longest Providence city hike, maybe even beating it at about 4.5 miles, and it took me most of the day. Unlike Providence, for the first time since Utah I was walking in shirt sleeves. This old city, founded in 1733, is spectacular! I moved from square to square, noting layout, memorials, and special pieces of art-fountains, etc.-in each one. I was also working on a plan to revisit a few sites the next day.
My side trips included St John the Baptist Roman Catholic Cathedral and Colonial Cemetery, which contains the graves of some of Savannah’s earliest residents, founders, and heroes. I even made an unexpected Greene discovery! Seems he was buried here in the Maitland family vault until 1901, when his remains were identified and moved to his Johnson Square monument. Another interesting site in the cemetery is “The Duellist’s” grave, with his unfinished poem on it. James Wilde, LT, US Army, wrote, “My life is like the summer rose, that opens to the morning sky; But ere the shades of evening close, is scattered on the ground-to die”.
