Forthing sat heavily on his cot. It was the eve of the long-awaited battle - Napoleons’s forces were finally coming. Ferris had promised him, with a hot look and a firm grip on his arm, to come and find him as soon as he could get away. He was sober again, for weeks, and he was a different man sober - an eager lover, a good friend. Now Forthing had been waiting hours, and he heard outside the tent the stumbling gait of a drunkard, and knew there would be no peace, no sweetness tonight.
