NEW VIDEO! What if porn and trafficking are more connected than we think?
A while ago, my favorite band started a movement called #SlavesNoMore, kicked off by the music video for their song, For Those Who Can’t Speak. The video’s above and it’s amazing so I suggest you watch it.
Anyway, the movement’s been going on for a while (yeah, talk about being late) but it still applies. The movement is basically speaking out directly against oppression (specifically the sex trade that has been going on for years). And here are my thoughts.
Oppression is like an onion. On top, there’s a false sense of security, like nothing’s wrong at all. When you get past that, there’s the more obvious layer of social oppression like bullying. But underneath those first two layers, there are the nastiest, deepest layers that are hidden right underneath our noses: You don’t even notice them until you cut up the onion. Twenty-seven million people are sold into sexual servitude, 98 percent of them women and girls.
They forced me to sleep with as many as 50 customers a day. I had to give [the pimp] all my money. If I did not [earn a set amount] they punished me by removing my clothes and beating me with a stick until I fainted, electrocuting me, cutting me. -Kolab, sex trafficking survivor from Cambodia
And like any onion, we have to deal with the problem in layers: first off, we need to spread awareness and speak out against it until the problem is no more, and then we need to live it: we are essential in making sure this kingdom of filth and oppression crumbles into ashes, and making sure it never happens again. We have to get off our islands and tackle this together.
Griselda’s Story
Today is #NationalHumanTraffickingAwarenessDay. There are nearly 30 million people enslaved worldwide- approximately 80% of that number involves sexual exploitation and 19% involves labor trafficking. Human trafficking is the second largest criminal enterprise in the world. The average age of a young woman being trafficked is 12-14 years old. Help end this terrible injustice by spreading awareness and praying for those with no voice. 🙏#stopslavery #dosomething #slavesnomore #forthosewhocantspeak #notforsale #enditmovement #daughtersrising #nfs #thetoteproject
