It wasn’t that Charlie wasn’t happy to be at Hogwarts, and it wasn’t that he wasn’t excited to start school, or the fact that he didn’t love being sorted into Slytherin. No Slytherin was cool, many of his family ended up in Slytherin. But with everything that’s happened with the war. The fact that Charlie’s family had to go into hiding to avoid Voldemort. It wasn’t so much the school and house that worried him as the people he would be surrounded by, kids whose parents were likely either Death Eaters in prison or Voldemort sympathizers. It made Charlie uncomfortable as he sat down at the Slytherin table for the feast. He could see some curious and some glaring looks his way. It made him lose his appetite.

“That’s it?” Barnaby rubbed at his chin, considering, and slowly broke into a grin. Now that Charlie had added in all those little details-- Barnaby could picture Snape’s frown with perfect clarity-- he could see why a silly thing like that could have made the other boy laugh so much.

“Where did you come up with something like that?”

He laughed heartily, grinning. He didn’t completely understand the Gryffindor, but Charlie seemed pretty fun-loving, and it was hard not to like someone who was so interested in dragons and magical creatures. Barnaby might not have spoken to him if Jacob’s sibling hadn’t been their mutual friend, but he was glad they were beginning to get to know each other better now. Breaking away from Merula had certainly given him more opportunity to spend time with interesting non-Slytherins.

“I hope I don’t think about that next Potions class-- Snape yells at me enough already without me laughing at him in the middle of lecture.”

“Hey.” Barnaby peeked into the classroom as the last of the other students began packing up to leave. He had missed more of class than he thought he had. Barnaby didn’t particularly care about showing up for Charms, but he admired and liked Professor Flitwick and he was not looking forward to facing the older wizard’s disappointed expression.

“I was helping Professor Kettleburn with his bowtruckles,” he said hurriedly, until he noticed that the small figure at the head of the class was not Flitwick at all.

“...who are you? What did you do with Professor Flitwick?”

@brazenlass wasn’t there.

“I thought we were going to duel in the courtyard at lunch today. Did you get lost?” He didn’t think she had skipped out because she was mad at him-- she would have shown up and channeled that anger into an aggressive set of spells, surely.

“Oh--”

“Did you get stuck with detention?”

“Right,” he said, pausing to think. Li had a point, and that meant...

“I need help.”

“How are we supposed to know what will happen if we fail if we haven’t failed yet?” He knew Snape would call him stupid-- that was a guarantee-- but how could they know what the potion would do?

“Do we just make it up?” He was right-- they were supposed to guess.
