Fort Mose • • • moh-Say or mo-Zay (sign at site says first way but Visit Florida says other way) recommended for Ancient City visitors, make the small trek to this site. • • • First free black settlement, established 1738 - more than 120 years before Emancipation Proclamation. Didn’t last long, people migrated to Cuba. • • • Would also recommend checking the @bittersoutherner story. Spent some time yesterday listening to Professor Chuck Ambers, a (knowledge wealthy #elder) introduce me to his incredible personal archive of thousands of Black artifacts, books, etc collected from around the world over the decades. A special emphasis of his collection is on early Black pioneers, black homesteaders, buffalo soldiers, black entrepreneurs, and black cowboys and cowgirls of the wild wild west. Stop #2: Gainesville, Florida. While in the northern part of Florida, we traveled to St. Augustine. As the oldest city in the country, you can see the first Spanish armed castle in U.S., the first open air slave market, and Fort Mose, an eradicated community of free slaves and Spaniards.
