Anybody for a 1930s fortune-telling tape measure? Not sinister in any way...
Fortune-Telling (Three Girls) by Halyna Mazepa, 1946
Fortune Tellers
okay so let’s talk about this fortune telling women thing…1) please just explain 2) why only women?
Okay SO
Diving
"Diving" is a term used by most fortune-tellers to describe the process of, well, telling the future. Just like any other skill, some people are naturally better at it (scholars have long debated factors that may play into this) and training and practice allow a person to improve in the ease and accuracy of their predictions.
The process itself requires intense focus to reach a plane frequently referred to as the Forth, where time and reality are malleable. This comes with its dangers: the teller's body is susceptible to harm, as the individual isn't able to consciously protect it, and once in the Forth, they have to be sure to keep focus and not lose themselves in this realm of comforting unreality (it's a complete release from the pressure of life, an irresistable freedom from worry and pain; many have been lost to the Forth, unable or unwilling to pull themselves from it while their body decays in the real world).
Once in the forth, a fortune-teller (I really have to come up with a better name for them...) must focus on whatever subject or person they want information on the future of. These glimpses may come in the form of images, words (visual or auditory), smells, feelings, or a combination; it largely depends on the individual, with visual or auditory visions being the easiest to interpret and most specific (meaning people who receive these forms of visions are most likely to pursue a practice in fortune-telling). Once they have the information they need, they can pull themselves back to reality. The longer an individual is in the Forth, the harder it is to return from it, and it is generally advised to spend no more than 5 minutes there.
Some fortune-tellers use conduits, like the classic crystal ball, to focus their abilities and anchor themselves, but this is mostly reserved for beginners or hobbyists, as it shows the lack of ability and can muddle visions.
Empheryne
Though belief in the gods varies greatly in this world, they are real. Empheryne is the goddess of the future, whose connection to the Forth allows fortune-tellers to dive. She is also the patron goddess of women and femininity (also a virgin goddess, though that's not really relevant). She is strongly tied moth-related symbolism, nearly always portrayed with a moth crown (some interpret this as a crown of actual moths, others make them moth-shaped gems). This crown is vital to her ability to connect the Forth to the mortal world, and thus to view the future.
The reason only women can tell the future/access the Forth is simple... Empheryne hates men. Beyond being the patron of women, she has a genuine digust of men, avoiding any sort of contact with them and even favoring fortune-tellers with minimal relations with men. She refuses to share her gift with men.
It is discussed in the novel that this is... kind of problematic.
I think that's all I have on fortune-telling. If you'd like me to clarify anything, or have any further questions, don't be afraid to ask. Thank you for the excuse to yap lol
