Smash Fighter Retrospective #1: Mario
I wanted to go through each of the characters in Super Smash Brothers and talk about my totally subjective thoughts on them.
So, Mario. The whole game is sorta named after his series. If there was only one character in the game, it would be him (despite what World of Light says). He’s one of only 12 characters to be in every single game in the series. Like the other eleven characters on that list, that means that his moveset has gotten pretty stale by this point. Most of his moves are the same from the very first game, which is why his moves are punches and kicks instead of featuring a boatload of references to his games, like the newer characters have. I think this isn’t the worst thing ever in his case though, because it helps to establish Mario as a well-rounded baseline character, just like he is in all the Kart and sports games.
Mario (as far as I understand) doesn’t really do anything super good or bad (besides being pretty easy to do combos with and having trouble killing). Gameplay wise, I feel like his most trademark feature is his spiking forward aerial (he does a slow punch that instantly kills an enemy who is positioned above a gap). It is so satisfying to pull off, even against the CPU.
Other than that, even a dummy like me can spam his uptilt and upair to form a combo. They are both quick, low impact moves that knock the opponent upwards, so it doesn’t take a professional to smack the attack button and pull of a bunch of hits in a row.
I’ve always a certain fondness for the red jumping man. As a 6 year old kid playing Melee for the first time at a McDonald’s playplace, Mario and Pikachu were the only characters I strongly recognized. I think when Brawl came out, I was less excited about him in lieu of the new characters, and the same when I got into Smash 3DS on release. Recently playing Ultimate, he’s never been my main, yet he is my 7th most played character at time of writing. He’s fun to play, not too hard.
I do wish he had gotten Cappy as a move, the way Link got his remote bombs as a move, but admittedly that’s a big ask.
I was so excited for the release of Ultimate, and I remember going back and forth on what to do first when the game came out. One of the main ideas I floated around was playing as Mario either in Classic or Versus first, given that he is the number one fighter in the game. I ended up staying up late and playing the game with a friend, and a stranger somehow stumbled upon us and joined for our inaugural match of Ultimate, but the point I am making is that despite being a bit bland, Mario deserves a certain amount of respect, and I am always happy to play as him.
Mario, Forward Aerial
Really quick, What if we had Mario's Forward Air be his hammer from the Mario & Luigi games?
For one, it's an actual reference to one of those genres of games in Mario's history AND the hit-boxes can stay the same! Granted they would have to model the hammer, and the range of the attack would technically extend because it's a weapon. But hey, Mario is the most versatile fighter in the game, right? Can't hurt to have a little bit of everything.
