the media likes to soapbox how things are 100% totes equal now. when like approximately 98% of casting directors, producers, directors, executives and leads are white men. a small fraction is women and poc and lbgta+. and rather than increase the percentage of women, poc and lbgta+, the percentage of white men stays the same and the small percentage of women, poc and lgbta+ have to fight for the same small piece of pie. when white men in hollywood have to hand over a small piece of their pie, like a sliver, they are up in arms over how they are being oppressed and harassed and having their rights taken away. when focus groups get made, most are white men. when movies get made, they want to appeal to just white men. why? because 98% of hollywood's infrastructure is white men. and they can't understand why anyone would want to see a film or tv show about anyone but them. so hollywood will give you one film with a lead actress. but it will be the only female lead film that will get a ad campaign and a bigger budget for special effects, still their budget will be smaller compared to male lead films. such that if they fail, the hollywood white men will get to prove that they made the right choice not to put money into it. this HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. just look at any fall line up of new shows. which ones have female leads? do they last? if they do, does the story suddenly get a wacky male character? for no reason??? do crappy male lead shows get canceled? yes. but like when ten new fall shows have an attractive white male, if one gets canceled, they won't stop making them.
