I feel like the folks who found Kuji frustrating (he had one very avid hater on MDL) were looking at it like "I would hate him as a partner" and completely ignoring Azuma's responses (or wildly misinterpreting them). I blocked them so I don't have to see their posts anymore.
No frfr that finale made me cry. Life in Smokey Blue just felt like a big long hug and continuous encouragement to keep on adulting. It was refreshing to have 10 eps of these two mature men dealing with day-to-day life and problems. And their blooming romance was there to catch them.
And it was a treat to watch them grow together and on their own. And watch them lean on each other and take from each other and uplift each other. It was amazing to watch them go from casual lovers, to friends, to something in between, and then to boyfriends all without things being fully labeled until the last episode. It was just them choosing to spend more and more time together. It was just them wanting to see each other and talk to each other and eat with each other and have sex with each other.
And also even how the knowledge of their sexualities was refreshing to see. Azuma only told people he wanted to know about him being gay, coming out to the world was not something he wanted. But also being gay was not something he was actively hiding either.
And I do love the full circle moment we get for Kuji from ep 1 to ep 10. The regret he felt for leaving Azuma after their first night together and how happy he was to have found Azuma again. He never stopped thinking about Azuma and the night they shared and I'm glad he decided that this time around he was going to stay with Azuma for himself.
As a person in her mid-30s I relate to Azuma a lot. You're never too old to pursue something new. It's never too late to change trajectories and do something else. It's okay to waffle between interests and jobs until you find something you want to stick with. And it's never too late to go to school if you want to.
This series felt like real life and I appreciated each and every episode.
I can't get past the summary for Teach You a Lesson basically seeming to imply "it's a shame teachers just can't hit kids anymore". And yet MDL loves it and it's making waves on Netflix... I have zero plans to watch this but it feels like I'm in the twilight zone on this one?

I must not fall victim to disgust. Disgust is the heart-killer. Disgust is the little-death that brings total apathy. I will face my disgust. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the disgust has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
As an older queer, allow me to say: the walls of the closet are load-bearing. It is our job as a community to stand in front of that door and tell everyone who wants to peek inside to fuck off.
There are so many reasons a person may choose not to come out and there is no reason a person would owe the public or a stranger that information. Certainly it's not owed simply because someone is famous.
We have fought for decades to make it safer for people to be open and authentic about themselves, but we are not yet there. And even if we were, the closet would still be something we need to maintain for those who are not ready to reveal that part of themselves.
May we never become so obsessed with representation that we forget the sanctity of privacy.

i get that americans love their cultural imperialism, but it really does piss me off that june is “international” pride month just because something happened in the united states.
in aotearoa, june isn’t our pride, it’s theirs. marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera are their historical figures, not ours. the phrase that “you owe your rights to Black trans women” is true there, but here we owe our rights to (mostly) Māori historical figures. i have the freedoms i do because of the legacy of an entirely different set of people operating in an entirely different context at entirely different times.
But because of american cultural imperialism, most queer people in Aotearoa don’t even know our own queer history. Carmen Rupe, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, the Dorian Society, Gillian Laundon, Georgina Beyer, and the Wolfenden Association are some of our queer history. We should know their names! we should know what they did for us! but because of the power of the american imperial machine, we don’t.
our national pride month should be july, the month that the Homosexual Law Reform Act passed in 1986. our two largest cities hold their pride festivals in february and march, respectively. american queer history has very little (or nothing, depending on who you ask) to do with our queer history. anecdotally, from my own queries, queer youth in aotearoa know more about american queer history than our own.
anyway, happy pride, americans. i’m truly sorry that most of you don’t see the negative impact your nation’s culture has on the rest of the world. and to the rest of the world reading this, try searching for your own country and culture’s queer history, don’t accept the american narratives as your own. we deserve our own histories divorced from the cultural hegemony of the USA.
We keep buying frozen pizza dough, continue to not be able to get it to stretch properly regardless of how long it rests at room temperature and yet we keep trying because maybe this time it will work.
Spoiler alert, it did not and I'm too hangry and PMSy so Wendy's it is. Fuck you pizza dough.
This fucking dough has been resting covered on my counter since 11 this morning. Still snapping back and full of holes.
After eating my Wendy's I gave it another go and did manage to make something resembling a pizza. Lunch for tomorrow I guess. I'm willing to give the pizza dough one more try. I think if I take it out even earlier maybe it will work? (see this is how it gets me)

Last night was the retirement dinner for our boss. Food was salty and lukewarm. Probably wouldn't go there again. Despite that I ate way too much (I knew I shouldn't have ordered dessert but did anyway) and predictably have indigestion this morning. Sigh.
