Fossil Forest Discovered in New York
Living in Westbury, NY, Valerie Varnuska maintains a strong interest in life sciences and earth sciences. Valerie Varnuska cites astronomy and paleontology as two of her favorite areas of science. Recently, researchers from Binghamton University in New York uncovered a fossil forest in Cairo, a town just 30 miles outside of Albany. New York is now home to two of the oldest fossil forests in the world, the newly discovered Cairo fossil forest and the Devonian fossil forest. The Cairo forest is estimated to date back nearly 400 million years when it was populated by fern-like plants and primitive conifers. The forest was also home to the Archaeopteris, the first leaf-developing plant species. The abundance of adjacent fish fossils has led scientists to conclude that the forest may have been lost during a massive flooding event. The fossils left behind by this ancient forest can help paleontologists understand how the earliest trees performed photosynthesis.
