So I was shitting around on reddit and decided to see if there was a subreddit for foster youth/alumni. I found one that is supposedly for ~all~ people involved in the foster care system but it’s mostly foster parents posting. Anyway, I stumbled upon a reply that was cautioning again “fostering out of birth order” and how it can fuck a kid up. Basically, it’s thought that if you take a foster kid who is, say, the youngest child in their family of origin, and then place them in a foster home where they are the oldest child, it can be a really overwhelming change of dynamics. So then I consider my situation: I was removed from a home where I had been a parentified, only child - and placed in a home where I was the eldest of *seven* kids, where I was once again thrust into an inappropriate caretaker role. And they all wondered why I started decompensating mentally/emotionally once I was removed, instead of getting better. Gee, I wonder.

There Is No Harsher Notion

Than saying that you don’t know your dad, and when people ask if you’ve reached out to him, saying that he doesn’t want to be part of your life, breaks your heart every time, and there’s no getting over that you don’t have any parents and a family that loves you and having to cover up that sinking feeling and catch in your speech gets a little harder every time.  Anyway.

My dad died when I was nine. In a car accident, I was with him in the car. While we waited for the ambulance, I tried to keep his chest closed, so he wouldn't bleed so much. When he died, my hands felt his heart stop beating. That's why I do this. It's also why I win all the contests. The patient's name is Tom.

Literally me when it comes to working in child welfare and advocating and becoming an attorney for foster kids in five or so years.

I'm not looking for recognition when I give a speech or sit on a panel. I talk about my experience and give a voice to kids in foster care because I needed it when I entered care. I needed someone to speak on my behalf and now that I can do it, I take care of every chance I get to talk about it because it's so important and not enough people talk about the realities of foster care.
