Filosofía aquí y ahora
the duality of man
Foucault, 2000. p. xiii.
Integrative Practice: inter-disciplinarity
Foucault’s approach on power and knowledge and their relationship is really intense. The analysis of Power and Knowledge chapter 2 gives a good idea of this relationship, as well as illustrates how to analyse the discourses of other fields. To end up the power and knowledge part, I wanted to leave this scene from Game of Thrones that came to my mind as I was doing the reading, and is one of my favorites from the show. I think it gives another view on how power and knowledge maintain themselves.

So now, analyzing inter-disciplinarity. I think it’s better to start with it’s knowledge nature. Inter-disciplinatity happens when different disciplinary fields are divided and division(s) of one field communicate with division(s) of the other (using the lecture slides as an example: the fields areellipses. The divisions are the small circles. Inter-disciplinarity is the small circle that belongs to two fields). The knowledge generated is useful for both fields separately as well as together. In the latter case, this knowledge can expand and evolve and if it gets big enough, create a disciplinary field for itself.
Its discourse is that of collaboration. It doesn't matter which are the disciplinary fields, what matters is that these fields can collaborate and make something productive.
The subjects are the disciplines. Through the discourse processes, those on the top of the chain, each one on their own field, decide what is relevant and what is not, thus molding the structures of the fields, the disciplines. The inter-disciplinary sub-fields change according to the individual changes.
I believe this power-knowledge relation is somehow similar to the inter-disciplinarity described above. Both can be different fields analyzed and studied separately, but have aspects in commom, creating a mutual ground.
For the final question: no one decides in utopia because no one needs to. On an utopian society, everyone knows what's best for the group and everything they do is for the greater good. When talking about choice, we usually imagine two or more options and that each one carry a certain weight. In utopia, all the individualistics aspects are put aside so the group may thrive. This takes out the thinking process ant sets all the decisions to the benefit of the group. There is no decision to be made, just a path to follow.
