Punch Diablo has earned an awesome 93-point rating from the critics, noting: "Every puff of this dark cigar gives the sensation of biting into a piece of chocolate fudge, studded with nuts, espresso beans and toasted coconut. Hints of caramel and earth make this smoke a sublimely rich experience."

La Palina Nicaragua Oscuro received a 90-point rating in November 2019. The review noted: "A thick log of a cigar with an open draw and even burn. Notes of cedar, black tea and citrus take on a touch of star anise before the malted chocolate finish."

Graycliff Original ‘Pirate’ (Red Label)

The cigars is well packed with tobacco, firm to the touch and free of soft spots. The wrapper had a really sweet honey and compost aroma, and the cold taste offered me some sweetness and earthy spices.

Founders KBS original

What we’ve got here is an imperial stout brewed with a massive amount of coffee and chocolates, then cave-aged in oak bourbon barrels for an entire year to make sure wonderful bourbon undertones come through in the finish. Makes your taste buds squeal with delight.

A Tasty Note "Founders KBS 2014"

The 'ol Kentucky Bourbon Stout.  The brew that is true.  

Here's what I took from this drinkie:

Empties into the chalice with the palace pitch black with a half a finger of foam and tons of sticky legs.  Big aroma of vanilla and coffee come to the front with some elegant bourbon heat and dark chocolate kindling to keep the fire ablaze.  The stout has a big fat body and chewy, almost pudding like feel as it cloyingly coats the tongue with sweet vanilla and molasses.  

With the taste you get an even bigger, tender embrace of vanilla and sweet chocolate with a butt of cherry-like fruitiness.  Sweet but not over abrasive on the tongue.  Reminds me of drinking a mocha or chocolate chip latte.

The bourbon is not very active in the taste but you can definitely tell it's there making this one very smooth all the way down.  

(Again, like a tender little smakaroo...  but maybe a bit wet) 

Chocolate dipped cherries, coffee and a bit of oaky smoothness balanced by some dipped black cherries on the back-end gives this stout a dry finish leaving your mouth coated...

making me think now of a wet smooch after she just ate a double dark chocolate, vanilla/bourbon ganache filled donut (that I had one time from the Cinnamon Snail Food truck in NYC).  She then proceeded to then brake into the food truck, lick the icing bowl clean, come back out to me and spit in my mouth...

but in a good way...  

Guess that's not so much a kiss anymore,

and I'm kinda starting to think she's an asshole.  

I have a few of these so it'll be fun to see how it tastes in a year.. or two or three.  I'm hoping it tastes like a hotdog.

The Amazing Kosmicki's Battle of the Kentucky Breakfast Stouts

Fresh KBS vs one year aged:

With a beer as hard to find as KBS, many of you may be wondering when the best time is to open up your small collection (if you got lucky this year) of bottles. This may surprise many of you but I do think that there is a clear difference between the aged and fresh and a clear winner. So which one is better?

ONE YEAR AGED!

The fresh bottle is big and bold and boozy and bruising. Lots of coffee and and chocolate- some vanilla and desert like malt, and of course the bourbon. It's an insane amount of flavor, and perhaps a bit too much to be fully appreciated as they all sort of fuse together in each sip. The aged version mellows things out a bit, diffracting each flavor into a slightly different time delay, allowing for each complex aspect of this beer to be appreciated. The bourbon is less hot and all flavor. There's less coffee and more chocolate, and it's smooth as all hell. It just possesses a balance and elegance that no other beer in the world has quite mastered to this extent. Some of you who like heat and coffee may disagree, but if you have yet to try an aged KBS, do yourself a favor and stock one away- you may be pleasantly surprised. Don't get me wrong, a fresh bottle of KBS is still one of the best beers out there, but age it for a year or two in proper conditions, and you'll have what is my personal favorite beer in the world.

What KBS does to people.

I love how the obsession with craft beer is so insanely contagious. A year ago today my Dad had no idea what the hell KBS was. A few days ago he not only stood in line for it at 9 AM, but he brought along my grandparents to snag a couple extra bottles. Take that 1 customer per bottle rules :)

Hopefully you all were lucky to snag a couple this year as well. If not, maybe I can cheer you up by letting you know that Founders plans on brewing 3x the normal amount next year.
