#Repost @foundwork.art with @make_repost ・・・ "Sharp Garments for Desperate Shamans: Shield Dress" (2020) by Sandra Lapage (@sclapage). Soft sculpture: recycled materials (aluminum, plastic), copper wire and staples. 71 x 31 x 20 in. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sandra Lapage's sculptural works, often made from trash and discarded materials, address a series of environmental and behavioral concerns. Malleable, and even wearable, these structures unfold into installations, photo-performances and photographs. For Lapage, "control is an illusion, and through the work, I exercise the acceptance of what recycled and everyday materials reveal, from accidents to new processes. The vital materiality of quotidian objects is my starting point and leads me to a reevaluation of the dichotomy between life/inanimate, human/nature... My work is made of impurity, of error, of failure, of frustration, of insubordination, of excessiveness and of organic accumulation." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #SandraLapage #sculpture #foundworkart https://www.instagram.com/p/CGxKhIjnLHn/?igshid=xave7ngnq2k4
Third contribution to Foundwork Ruth Owens (@ruthowensart) is one of the latest artists featured in our Guest Curators program on Foundwork. Owens was chosen by Kalup Linzy (Kalup Linzy Studio), an acclaimed American video and performance artist and currently a 2019 Tulsa Artist Fellow. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ About Owens’ work, Linzy remarks that her “well balanced compositions and emotional use of colors with children as subjects, give semblance of an adult still connected to childhood memories. Although her brushstrokes lean toward something abstract, the emotions of the artist and her subjects aren’t forfeited. Her execution draws the viewer in more, hankering them to spend more time engaging with her narratives." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Speaking about her own work, which Owens identifies as being frequently based on old super-eight footage from family home videos, she relates that “each painting is rooted in a pivotal memory from childhood and represents a psychologically intense moment of personal influence, set in a culture of racial divide...Negotiating psychological and cultural tensions is my driving force, and my communicative tools lie in a very expressive and organic method of painting. The surfaces are scratched, left bare, glopped on, and dripped on for a mood consistent with the emotive content of the image. The surface not only becomes a metaphor for the vulnerability of our physical bodies, but it further represents an attempt to embrace a fluidity of racial identity in order to subvert the prescribed identity dictated by our dominant culture.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ruth Owens was born in 1959 in New Orleans, LA, where she is currently based. We invite you to see more work by Owens and read her additional artist text on her Foundwork profile. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Artwork Images (in order of display): ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Best Birthday” (2018). 2nd artist I highlighted for Foundwork @flow_zak @foundwork.art @adam.yokell Zakriya Rabani (Zakriya Rabani) is one of the latest artists featured in our Guest Curators program on Foundwork. Rabani was chosen by Kalup Linzy (Kalup Linzy Studio), an acclaimed American video and performance and currently a 2019 Tulsa Artist Fellow. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ About Rabani’s practice, Linzy comments that “as a response to spending the majority of his life in academic institutions, Rabani’s work explores and critiques ideologies that have allowed these systems to remain in place. When diving deeper into his work, one might uncover answers or even begin to mine the subcultures that have been created as a result of these entities." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Looking at Rabani’s profile on Foundwork, we’re impressed with how the artist transforms everyday objects—skateboard decks, rubber bands, classroom desks—into sculpture and installation that opens a broader line of inquiry while at the same time pointing back to specific cultural—or, as Linzy mentions, subcultural—objects that evoke deeply personal associations. We invite you to visit Rabani’s profile on Foundwork to learn more about the artist and see more of his projects in various media. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Zakriya Rabani was born in 1993 in Naples, FL, and is based in Tallahassee, FL. Rabani received his MFA in 2018 from University of South Florida, Tampa, and his BFA in 2015 from the University of Florida, Gainesville. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Artwork Images (in order of display): ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Divine Decks” (2017). 1st artist contribution to Foundwork @foundwork.art @adam.yokell Meredith Stoudenmire (Greenville, SC) is one of the latest artists featured in our guest curators program on Foundwork. Stoudenmire was chosen by Kalup Linzy (Kalup Linzy Studio), an acclaimed American video and performance artist and currently a 2019 Tulsa Artist Fellow. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ About Stoudenmire’s practice, Linzy remarks that her “works are powerful because they create a feeling of innocence and a sense of danger. Euphoric feelings experienced in childhood are paired with environments that appear to be on the verge of a nightmare. Maintaining their innocence and oblivious to the dangers surrounding them, the children in these works move through the forecasted perils unaffected. With no conclusions in sight, the viewer may find themselves fearing for her subjects and hoping they find their way to safety before what feels like the inevitable happens." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Meredith Stoudenmire was born in 1975 in Greenville, SC, where she is currently based. Stoudenmire received her BFA in 1999 from Atlanta College of Art, Atlanta, GA. We invite you to visit her profile on Foundwork to learn more about the artist and see more of her ominously engaging and formally inventive paintings. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Artwork Images (in order of display): ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “The cracks are hot lava 5” (2018).
