If you haven't listened to Rule #15 - Four Aces by Fish in a Birdcage (AKA Dustin Townsend), or even Fish in a Birdcage at all, please check it out!!! His stuff is wonderful!!!!

A half-assed summary of the lore of Four Aces is basically Thomas, a skilled poker player from Marksville, Louisiana in the mid-1800s moves up to Monroe to get away from his crappy town and neglectful family. He spends most of his time at Sal's, a local saloon, and befriends a traumatized saloon girl named Idla and they bond a lot. Thomas gets into a fight with a non-regular player, Henry, after he beat the others straight with four aces. Henry, drunk and angry, claims Thomas cheated and pulls out a gun. Idla tugs on Thomas' arm and tells him to run for the exit, when Henry misses the shot on Thomas and plants a bullet in her brain. Idla dies and Thomas, in anger and grief, takes Idla's dagger and repeatedly stabs Henry to death with it. He is swiftly shipped to North Carolina for his 24 year long hard-labour sentence on the Western North Carolina Railroad, and dies before his release.

Cute stuff.

Obviously I took the original song and added my own ideas because (a) I need to give Idla a backstory and personality please and (b) I cannot write or deal with romance so instead of Idla being "my woman" I made her and Thomas crackheaded best friends.

The entire story has a lot to do with relationships, primarily platonic relationships, but also with sexual and familial (parents and siblings) relationships, because I'm very tired of romance honestly lol

Honestly, Thomas lacks the ability to feel regret for...anything really. He can be selfish and impulsive but a lot of that has to do with his rough upbringing and having to look out for himself, making it difficult to form actual relationships.

And yes I made him asexual because of his poker hand heehee

The amount of research I had to do...for one song... (I might make their story into a forensics speech :])
