Stakeland II : Review

YES, there was a senior gay couple that were nonchalant about it and who were also pretty bad ass. [side note: interesting that the gay couple are normal/good people and the straight couple we see at the beginning are violent/bad...wonder what the writer was trying to say about that]

NO, every single woman with a speaking role D I E D. Like every single one. Usually, if there's going to be a woman in the fridge trope, its reserved to just one woman for the plot to move but four!? [1- his wife & daughter, 2- the woman that tried to kill him, 3- Billie, 4- Lady]. Also the gay couple died too (but that's a typical fate for gay couples in media so....)

Basically, in a post-apocalyptic world, there is room for gay couples to exists but only cis white men actually survive because they matter?

BLAME! : REVIEW

Its a style of anime that I've never really liked but it really works for the movie's fast pace.

The movie's male lead, Killer, really reminds of the original Conan the Barbarian movie with Arnold Swizzniger in that the guy never talks. That was actually really annoying since all the characters would ask him questions and he would just not answer or walk away.

Also, it seemed like humans weren't really "human" anymore. I think they more cyborgs at this point since Killer and Cibo are regarded as humans even though they are clearly robots. I wish they had explained a little better how there are different types of humans. Either we were supposed to infer this or the writers themselves didn't figure this part out so just kind of glossed over that detail.

Misaeng

Synopsis: Korean area man attempts to be an adult. Discovers that people are fake and petty.

Genre: Drama

Rating: 4/5

There were some things that I wondered if I was missing because of cultural differences:

1. NO ONE PACKED LUNCH. I don't know if that's a thing in Korean office life, but as a westerner, it was the one thing that really bugged me. Is food in Korea cheap? Like is it next to nothing for office workers  to not think twice about it? Even then, since Gea-jung lives with his mom, wouldn't she pack his food? Wouldn't Yoong-ji, who is always paying off debt, pack lunch to save money? Can someone explain to me why this never came up in the show?

2. SEXISM. Is sexism that prevalent in Korea? Or is it just made more glaring in the show for dramatic effect? Things like Yoong-ji's team not wanting to work with her because she was a girl seemed like something I would see in an 80s movie and not a movie set in 2012.

3. WORK DAY. What is a typical work day for Korea? Like do people in an office clock out at 5pm? At what point is an office worker considered to be working overtime?

4. LANGUAGE. Is learning a second language in Korea really that clutch for the job market?

5. HAIRTSYLE. Was Sea-kul having the same hairstyle as Gea-jung when he was depressed supposed to mean that he was behaving like him (i.e. pushover) or did his hairstyle mean that he was reverting to a little boy (Gea-jung's hairstyle is a little boy's hairstyle)? Why did it matter if Bonk's hair is curly? Basically, do different hairstyles signify different caricatures?

Table Manners

The wildest thing to me in a lot of Korean drama shows is when rivals sit across a table from one another and have dinner/tea together. No matter how intense the convo is or how harsh the insults are, they always manage to follow polite society protocol - eg. turn away to drink alcohol in front of your elder/superior

That just does not happen on shows like love and hip hop. You sit across the table from your enemy, and anything on the table (or the table itself) is getting thrown their way.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that in Korean society, the table is where you throw shade. But in Black society, its where you catch hands.

Borderline

Synopsis: The Office. But British and at an airport.

Ratings: 3/5

Genre: Comedy; Mockumentary

Ok show...had its funny moments.
