My dachshund is extremely quiet, we thought her vocal cords were cut at first (she's a rescue) but she finally got to where she will bark once she realized she won't be punished. She wouldn't even run for months and now she will rarely run. My moms dachshund on the other hand is a barker and even if a lead moves she barks to let us know.
Sometimes you'll get the rare exception, and you're lucky when it's something that's usually an obnoxious habit. :v
I also thought my dachshund didn't know how to howl because for about 2 1/2 years he'd never make a peep, only bark. Suddenly one day he got riled up enough and let out the most blood-curdling shriek of a howl that anyone could hear, and it's so unfortunate. This little guy is adorable, loving, everything about him is way too cute. Until you hear his howl.
God, I hate his howl.
