A thing! Here to pester you! Anything to share about your monhun ocs?
A THING!!! uhhhh where do i even begin
i guess heres some things i didnt say about Doe in my initial post bc hes blorbo of the year;
- Doe is transmasc, he might’ve started transitioned before he lost his memories but if he did he doesn’t remember; doe had to figure it all out from scratch, he was initially referred to as “Jane” as in “Jane Doe” before realizing how weird it made him feel and politely asking to just be referred to by the surname until he figured out a better name/remembered his old one, the name eventually stuck.
- I imagine his name probably changes drastically depending on the game language, as he technically has no name at all, for the Japanese version he starts of as Hanako Yamada, then later just goes by Yamada, or Shika to keep with the deer theme
- Hes a busy body and goes through a lot of “phases” with what hobbies he likes. Its mostly part of his self exploration arc, the few hobbies that stuck with him are cooking, gardening, photography and reading (or like. research in general, he likes to go through rabbit holes lol), he also likes to sew though its not something he’ll pick up as often, and he much later on gets recognized by the guild for kinsect husbandry
- Hes going to be one of those wyverians that grows to be like 10-15ft tall, though he wont get like that till much later in life, hes around 5’10-11 right now
- Very strictly a “Catch and Release” type of hunter, all his hunts go towards the research of live specimens or are brought into captivity to be treated for sickness/injury and later released back into the wild
dumps them all out of a sack onto the table and lays them out like a merchant displaying their wares. take your pick which one do you want. sidley’s on sale
Hmmm…Marion and Rue…two people who have been irrevocably changed by Fatalis(+other dragons)..
how I imagine both of them feel when meeting each other like. so you’re in this weird purgatory too huh. basically a dragonborn marion and scaly rue with her nergi babies shaking hands vigorously
real talk tho I love the different paths we’ve taken for how they cope with their irrevocable changes… rue finding new ways to love her body and be at peace with her not-quite-personhood while marion finds respite in his new body being able to produce new life, no matter how small. I’m such a big fan of trauma recovery and the likes so the diversity here is amazing
So. Bonded monsters. Is it limited to non-dragons or could a person theoretically bond with an elder? Are some types of bonds more common or likely to occur? And are there any other tidbits you’d like to share?
ahem. these are great questions >:3 let me think…
for elder dragons, I think they might be the exception here - if only because I personally believe elders are already much smarter than regular monsters! it’s a bit hard to explain, but I don’t think they’d become bonded as often as regular monsters could since elders operate on their own playing field. most are smart enough to avoid humans altogether in canon, and in my head, they have their own agenda that typically involves No Hunters, hence why they usually attack on sight lmao.
elder dragons can be friendly toward people tho, primordial malzeno’s a good example of that. but being protective of one specific person… I think that’d be in extremely rare circumstances.
on the opposite side of that, what bonds are more likely to occur would probably be rivalry types or parenthood, maybe… parenthood style bonding would happen more often with fanged beasts (if we go with the headcanon that hunters are descendants of fanged beasts), altho the opposite can happen with any monster, a hunter finding a young monster that imprints on them (somebody brought this up in the tags, can’t remember who </3). rivalry bonds would be more common with hunters just by the nature of hunting, altho most rival-bonded monsters would be slayed before the hunter realizes or notices :( monsters that are combat oriented tend to form these bonds, but less likely than parenthood/imprinting, as most monsters wouldn’t necessarily be friendly toward any creature they see as a rival . so.
another thing is, monsters more prone to social behaviors are more likely to become bonded monsters: yian kutkus, zinogres, ludroths, etc. “territorial” bonds like Marion and Pyrrus’ bond are very rare, as monsters that prefer living solo wouldn’t be too keen on a hunter on its side of town unless that hunter is what they’ve decided to protect - and that doesn’t happen much at all.
more details below, this is getting long lmao
what each type of bond looks different also!
parenthood/imprinting bonds would follow a monster’s general behavior toward their own young or parents - it’s common with fanged beasts because that classification raise their young. now, the hunter doesn’t have to be a kid for a monster to try and tend to them like its young; there’ll be a period of time where the monster will groom, preen, or feed its hunter and want to keep an eye on them, but gradually the monster will start to distance itself. the behavior never stops, just slows down so it isn’t total mama bear over a grown ass man yknow-
rivalry bonds are probably the most different! these monsters don’t follow their hunters around or stay close, and they aren’t really protective of them either, but these monsters do view the hunter as an equal regardless. more importantly, these monsters remain in the wild, in their home territory. it looks by all means like a normal monster, up until its hunter shows up and gets full-body tackled by it. think like those videos of lions love-tackling their humans while in giant enclosures - that’s how rival-bonded monsters act lmao
territorial bonds is if you gave a monster separation anxiety. except that anxiety manifests as absolute hell-raising until it can be with its hunter. these ones are the most problematic because of how aggressive territorial monsters can be… you can just imagine how bad that is when its “territory” it guards and protects is a living breathing social animal that has a life outside of hunting/the wilderness/that monster .
before this phenomenon was identified, territory-bonded monsters were labeled as aberrant and slayed on sight because of their destructive nature, storming into villages and towns in search of its hunter, the like. compared to its own kin, these monsters tend to be weaker, smaller, or lacking a key aspect to properly claim their own territory, so picking a hunter is their best opportunity to have something.
in theory, bonded monsters could also choose anything else; rivalry bonds could be with rival monsters (although this would be one-sided and result in either the “rival” fleeing from the bonded monster’s territory or either dying); interspecies adoption is fairly common, but would lack the same degree of persistent care bonded monsters would show to their hunters (as the adopted monster would go to live on its own, leaving the bonded monster alone); territory-bonded monsters could develop fixations on other monsters, smaller monsters/endemic life, or even plants/objects. for territory-bonds… I’m sure there’s been kulu ya kus that have been very attached to certain rocks or ancient artifacts LOL. you get the idea! the point is, this phenomenon isn’t limited to just hunters. these monsters are weird guys living in a weird world, who knows what they’re getting up to
not on hand unfortunately </3 I do have her in tomodachi life if that counts. behold, the silly (au where she's normal and not infected with the frenzy and is like okay with her brother being around her)
(also feel free to add her to your guys’ island, she’s very silly on mine so feel free to inflict her with whimsy)
when I have access to mhwilds I’ll try to get some shots of her, especially in combat… but most of those are gonna be her masked. I’d have to start a new file to get her without the mask (or buy a character voucher thing)
Uuuuggguuuuhhh you made me think about writing a Vesper & PriMal sickfic. Are you happy now
yes very >:3 you Must think about how tender this terrifyingly powerful elder dragon would be to her ward . giving you brainworms and brainworms and brainworms
Favorite mh armor sets go 🫵 any game/version/whatever
ooo this is a fantastic question okay, excuse me while I ramble way too long LOL
the very first time I played mhworld (my first game into the series) I was rocking the bazelgeuse armor for the longest time. once I got iceborne, that then switched to the seething bazelgeuse armor because HELLO pretty woman (excuse the blurryness I stole from google). if you can’t tell this is my favorite armor set of all time and yes it’s bc I’m biased but also. pretty woman.
eventually I got into the seasonal festivals I fell in love with the master rank halloween set and full bloom set because, again, pretty women (can you tell I don’t like the “male” armor sets lmao). it’s a slow grind to get the fits I do want in that game, but some that get the shoutout is great girros, odogaron, and frostfang barioth.
in rise (only game I played as a guy), I really like the izuchi armor! I also enjoy the utsushi armor and have mixed that with zinogre armor and enjoyed the look of that. again, not as many I like because of the genderlocked armor lmao
now WILDS is a different story. I’ve become full fashion hunter and gotten (almost) every single armor set available. outside of the fits I’ve already shown off for malenia, I LOVE the “male” ceremonial armor. it’s a bit too masc for malenia to wear canonically but I personally love how princely it looks. one of my top favorites for sure. lala barina’s whole set is also a top favorite, second to seething bazel.
I might reblog this again when I refresh my memory tho bc I am Not remembering what armor sets are my favorites. seething bazel and lala barina stick out the most but I’m sure there’s more
