The head of the National Institutes of Health mans up, saying it's time to include women in panels

The NIH director will no longer speak in science and medicine forums that don't include women.

“It is time to end the tradition in science of all-male speaking panels, sometimes wryly referred to as ‘manels.’ Too often, women and members of other groups underrepresented in science are conspicuously missing in the marquee speaking slots at scientific meetings and other high-level conferences. When I consider speaking invitations, I will expect a level playing field, where scientists of all backgrounds are evaluated fairly for speaking opportunities. If that attention to inclusiveness is not evident in the agenda, I will decline to take part.”

Happy National Day of Prayer and Reason!

May 2nd is the National Day of Prayer and the National Day of Reason, but as a Catholic who worships the Logos--ie the Word of God and Second Person of the Trinity also known as Jesus Christ--I think it’s weird to act like faith and reason are conflicted or opposed. They go together, so I say we cram the two days into one!

The author of the above is but one of many scientists who also believes in religion. He led the Human Genome Project and discusses how he sees God’s hand reflected in the intricacies of DNA. Neat!

Kelly Corrigan Wonders airs on our NPR station on Sunday mornings when I am making coffee. I usually miss up to a half hour or more before I get up. This is the second episode this year I went to PRX listen to the full broadcast. The first one was with Pete Buttigieg’s husband, Chastan. This one with Francis Collins was also worth listening to the whole episode.

The interview ranged from genetics to medical research to politics to atheism. It was for me a good hour spent.

The friendship between Francis Collins and Christopher Hitchens was a surprising one between an atheist author and a Christian scientist, which developed in 2010 after Hitchens was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Collins reached out to him and, during Hitchens' final year, they developed a deep friendship built on mutual respect despite their profound disagreements on faith. Hitchens, even on his deathbed, called Collins "the best of the faithful" and one of the "greatest living Americans."
