Bud Powell was to the piano what Charlie Parker was to the saxophone.  He had a troubled life filled with tragedy and mental illness. Dance of the Infidels, is a very moving  jazz memoir of the close  personal relationship of Francis Paudras with the great pianist, Bud Powell. Paudras met Bud Powell as a young jazz fan in the late fifties.  Paudras  was extraordinarily devoted to Powell, and acted as de facto guardian and unofficial manager during Powell's troubled stay in Paris during the late 50's and early 60's. Paudras encouraged Powell to create some of his finest music.

'Deep Night', by Bud Powell

Francis Paudras writes in his book 'Dance Of The Infidels', page 211: "...Philippe (Koechlin, the editor in chief of 'Jazz Hot') knew I regularly recorded Bud at home and he suggested that Tronchot (another editor) put out a record based on my tapes, if Bud agreed, of course. The private nature of the recordings, the confidential and intimate climate of the music, made them unique. Bud was excited about the project and we spent part of the weekend picking out the tunes and timing them. Among the works we chose were some solo ballads and some fast pieces he had played with me, as a duet. When Bud played, I would sometimes pick up a pair of brushes and accompany him on a newspaper. The album came out on the Fontana label, entitled 'Bud Powell At Home'. On the cover was a nice shot of Bud seated comfortably in his armchair..."

The sound quality is less than perfect, the piano is slightly out of tune, Bud's mind and body are ill, but if you put your headphones on and close your eyes, Bud is playing just for you, in your livingroom.
