Brew #289: Franciscan Well Brewery Pilgrims Session Pale Ale

Abv: 4%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Slight honeydew melon, malt and caramel

Pour: Clear amber with white froth reducing to skim

Taste: A wash full of straw and hay with light fruity notes of green grape and faint citrus. Medium carbonation with light resinous mouth feel and a decent hop bite to finish. Light dryness and medium bitter. Aftertaste is faint cedar. A nice palatable session ale this.

Brew #170: Franciscan Well Brewery Chieftain Irish Pale Ale

ABV: 5.5%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Pine, citrus, light malt

Pour: Dark amber with off white froth reducing to a skim

Taste: Malt on the wash with loads of pine coming through. A light dryness with some mid range fruitiness before ending on a very slight bite. Not much afteratste. This was ok, I’ve had Chieftain on draught and it was great so I was a little disappointed with the contents of this can.

Brew #168: Franciscan Well Brewery Rebel Red

ABV: 4.3%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Malt, toffee, slight fruitiness

Pour: Clear ruby amber with a tan skim

Taste: Lovely toffee caramel wash with a red berry tang underneath. Finishes on a light dryness, smooth, refreshing. Solid red ale, very nice.

Brew #153: Franciscan Well Friar Weisse

ABV: 4.7%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Banana, light spice, bread

Pour: Opaque amber with a disappearing white froth

Taste: Warm spice upfront with the banana in the mid wash and a touch of caramel malt. Ends on a light citrus bite. Such a nice brew and the fact they decided to go down a commercial path and take Molson Coors cash for expansion of brand and operation doesn’t seem to have affected their product, yet. Fairplay to them, they have manged to retain their craft identity whilst piggy backing on big brand incursion into the Irish domestic craft market, the cute Cork hoors...

Brew #83: Franciscan Well Rebel Red Irish Red Ale

ABV: 4.3%

Served: Off the shelf

Aroma: Biscuit, malt

Pour: Ruddy brown, clear with an off white froth

Taste: Tea and berries washing into that biscuit malt. Nice light sweetness undercut with a medium bite at the finish. Grand.
