Thursday, March 6: Sodom, "Persecution Mania" [ENCORE]

The Today’s Metal Tune tumblr posted its first song March 5, 2014.  To celebrate 11 years of METAL we are revisiting some of the most noted tracks from over the years- these are the songs that garnered more likes, reblogs and/or comments, and while some of the artists might be expected, the songs maybe not so much, which is what makes this week’s set such an interesting list.  A huge THANK YOU to everyone that has followed, liked, reblogged and commented over the past 11 years, there’s much more still to come…

“Persecution Mania” was among the tunes that helped Sodom stand alongside Kreator and Destruction as the Big 3 of German thrash, separating the band from its American counterparts by paying less attention to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and emphasizing the Venom and Hellhammer influences. Indeed, Persecution Mania’s title track was pure chaos from beginning to end, with Tom Angelripper’s proto-death metal vocals sounding even more unhinged than Mille Petrozza, while the wonderfully named Witchhunter didn’t so much play his drums as attack them.  Frank Blackfire (aka future Kreator guitarist Frank Gosdzik) wasn’t a shredder on par with other thrash legends, but he was a fine enough successor to preceding guitarists Grave Violator and Destructor (if nothing else, Sodom’s members had excellent stage names).  This was an angrier and more shambolic strain of thrash, even more so than early Slayer, and ultimately not only set the band apart from its peers but also set the stage for even more extreme forms of metal.
