He’d heard that Mathematics was like the equivalence of love: a simple idea that can get complicated. Yet, every time he’d gone on a date with a woman, it was as if he were solving a simple equation as if comparing two true expressions. He felt as though he was impenetrable to the complexities love was capable of. But now, with Helen thrown into the equation as a variable expression, he wondered if they were going too fast for him to solve it since he’d never been struck this hard with infatuation.  Perhaps his feelings were heightened by the influence of his mother and older sister berating him while visiting his family in Long Island over the summer: 

"When will you finally settle down, Frank?” His mother asked. 

“You’re not getting any younger, you know?” His sister second. 

“You’re turning 40 next year!" His mother added as if he hadn’t known.

When the school year commenced just like any other year, a wave of acceptance washed over him, realizing his complacency in life. So what if he was 39? He had a decent job with top-notch retirement benefits. He had solid friends to count on, and his hobbies, music and gaming, kept him happy and fulfilled in his downtime. Soooooo, let's talk for a minute about HOW in the heck Mr. G put the moves on Mia's mom. Like what did he say to Helen when they were in the parent teacher conference about Mia flunking? "So, Ms. Thermopolis, Mia is flunking algebra. And oh, hey, do you want to go out with me?" Yeah, this seriously needs to be a thing.

Frank (Mr. Gianini) is a goofy, fun-loving nerd who is also a real gentleman, and I think Helen finds that curious and refreshing since her last boyfriend turned out to be a Republican. (movie quote put into context with the book) Helen: Mr. [Gianini] is not married, he's not living with anyone, plus, he's not pierced, tattooed, or hair plugged. Do you realize how rare a find that is [in Manhattan]...?"
