When federal officer Raymond Caffrey escorted bank robber Frank Nash to Union Station, gangsters opened fire in an attempt to help Nash escape. “The Gateway to the West,” Kansas City’s Union Station began operating in 1914. The absolutely stunning beaux art structure saw up to 271 trains pass through in a single day. The site of spectacular history as well, Union Station still carries the battle wounds of a 1933 shootout between the police and gangster Frank Nash’s crew. Today you’ll find the Amtrak station, a post office as well as restaurants and traveling exhibits in Union Station.
