CATCH ME IF YOU CAN (2002)

            Frank Abagnale is best known for being an American con artist and criminal. Leonardo DiCaprio played him in a Steven Spielberg film.

            In his youth, Abagnale began working as a security consultant and became a forger and imposter. He claimed that he pretended to be an airline pilot, physician, a prisons agent, and lawyer.

            He was arrested in France in 1969 and spent less than five years in prison before he was allegedly employed by the federal government. He stated that he then worked as a consultant and lecturer for the FBI academy and field offices.

            Abagnale is a controversial figure, as many of his claims have been disputed. Whilst it is true he was a small time con artist as he did forge checks, pretended to be a pilot and escaped prison there were claims the rest may have not been true at all. He wore a pilot uniform to pose as a pilot, he did so to cash in bad cheques. He stated that he worked as a doctor and a baby nearly died in his care because he didn’t know what a ‘blue baby’ meant. He also posed as a doctor so he could do physical exams on female students.

He did start up a company to identify bad cheques, however, it was said that he had limited dealings with the FBI and has never worked for them. There was also no Tom Hanks character who was pursuing him. Abagnale claimed to he worked as a Sociology teaching assistant at University for a semester under the name of Frank Adams, however this has been disputed.

            Before his book was released, his antics were investigated and there was no evidence of the description under the names that he calimed he used. Abagnale said that his co-writer exaggerated his biography. Writer Alan Logan wrote a book The Greatest Hoax on Earth: Catching Truth, While We Can, strongly questions Abagnale’s tales.

            Catch Me If You Can may not be a ‘true story’ after all.
