Purple: Ten Facts About My Room
{ H O G W A R T S }:
(ONE) — Above Lily’s bed, she’s made a medium sized poster of really muggle things she likes that she can’t really get at Hogwarts as well as some things that remind her of home. Sure, her parents can send them but she’d rather not have them waste the money and the time — unless it’s something she really really needs. The collage was started over the summer after her first year when she realized that she would indeed miss home. The collage consists of Petunia’s corsage in the right corner of it, which is was a white rose from her mothers garden. Lily secretly has a fondness for prom, because it was one of the times her, Petunia, and her mother, Zinnia, all got along. They all went shopping together for Petunia’s dress and for once Lily actually behaved her best, and was extremely helpful. It’s all shriveled and browned now, but she will forever keep it. It’s also something she’s always wanted to go to. Around various areas, there are pictures of her family members. There’s a picture of her mother and her father at their wedding, her mum’s wedding dress, a picture of the whole family together on Lily’s 8th birthday — there was nothing particularly special about that birthday, really. Just the mere fact that everyone was together and happy is enough for Lily. The ticket Petunia gave her after Petunia’s first Beatles’ concert. It was something Petunia gave up to Lily after she started to “grow up”. A picture of Twiggy adorns the left side, something her mother doesn’t really like so she brought it to Hogwarts. Last but not least, in the middle there’s a picture of Lily aged 12, randomly taken by Petunia. It was one of those days after hey got into a horrific fight and Lily vowed to stay in her mother’s side garden until Petunia took her “head out of her tiny butthole” about her being a witch. Petunia thought Lily was being horribly dramatic and rude (which she was) but she thought if people could do sit-ins everywhere else and they were effective — she could too. Lily please.
(TWO) — Nutella. Lily is a self proclaimed Nutella addict and if there’s one thing she asks her mum to get her while she’s away at Hogwarts it’s Nutella. The day before she goes to Hogwarts, her and her mother have a whole day together. Because Lily always packs ahead of time, her and her mother have the whole day to themselves. This includes going to the cinema, having a nice lunch or dinner, grabbing an industrial size of Nutella (yes industrial, no shame) and spending hours tending to her mother’s garden till they’re too tired to do anything else but sit on the couch and watch Doctor Who on the telly.
(THREE) — On the note of chocolate, Lily has a small stash of muggle miniature chocolate liquor bottles. If she’s going to drink, she’s going to drink something that doesn’t burn her throat ridiculously like firewhiskey. It was a present from Mary on her sixteenth birthday in an effort to get Lily to drink when they all did. Though most of it is unopened, at times she’ll have a sip just because she actually does like the taste and wants to join in with her friends shenanigans. Though she knows she’ll get in major trouble if she’s found out, the sentiment behind it makes her keep it.
(FOUR) — Everyone has bad days, and Lily Evans is no exception. One of the only times her an her father have had a heart to heart was the summer after her incident with Severus. He had always been really very fond of Sev, and noticed that he wouldn’t come around the house like he used to. Being the quiet, no nonsense man he is (or how Lily perceives him as), it was a surprise when he asked her about her best friend Sev with a concerned expression on his face. She was truly shocked — too shocked for words that he would come to her concerned. Lily was always her mother’s daughter, while Petunia was her father’s — it was an unspoken agreement in the family. He took this as her not wanting to talk and took out his old collection of Archie Joke Book Comics. They went through all 6 of them (because only a few came out at the time), and laughed til they cried. She gets a new one every month from him, and keeps them on her bed stand, in the middle drawer whenever she needs a laugh. While the redhead isn’t really the biggest fan of them, the sentimental value is priceless.
(FIVE) — Her very own Wizard chess set. Lily brings it around the castle with her on Sunday mornings, going around, looking for students (particularly muggleborns who have been bullied) who look lonely and/or distraught. She likes to play and teach them how to play in an effort to show them the good side of magic. The side that doesn’t hurt them, that’s fun, creative, and brilliant.
{ H O M E }:
(ONE) — Lily has an enormous collection of books that seem to take over her room. Stacks on somewhat disorganizational stacks that she’s had to push to her little reading hub (please ignore the laptop, Lily might be brilliant but not that brilliant) in the right side of her room. Many of them are by J.R.R. Tolkein, including the first book she ever read, Farmer Giles of Ham. There’s also the Chronicles of Narnia, Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Nancy Drew, Charles Dickens books, Jane Austen (though those are very dusted over). It’s the only aspect of Lily’s room that’s particularly messy, really, but it’s exactly how she likes it. In her mother’s words “Home is free expression not first impressions.”, and having at least one aspect of her room messy is something her mother encourages.
(TWO) — A pink lava lamp with pink flowers, given to her by her aunt Chrysanthemum. Yes, her name is that, and she’s a real hippie. No shaving, peace protesting, march on Washington, hippie. She embraces her flower name, more than Lily ever does (or wants to) but having a nice reminder of her is always something she loves. It’s a reminder to Lily during the summer to never forget who she is, what she loves to do, and what she wants to do with her life. To never sacrifice who you are and what you want— even if it is in the form of a lava lamp.
(THREE) — An ouija board hastily thrown/hidden under her bed. When her and Petunia were young, and she started to show signs of magic before Severus told her what she was — her and Tuney decided to try a ouija board. Of course, it was just a ploy on Petunia’s part to try to scare Lily away from her childish ideals about magic, which just made Lily angry when she figured it out.
(FOUR) — Mary Quant cosmetics were something particularly popular in the 70’s and Lily was no exception to contributing to the craze. Having naturally unruly and curly red hair, Lily’s done everything she can to tame it. The day she had elixirs and learned spells to tame it was truly a god send — but while she’s at home she uses all of products she can. Her mother gives her Earth Born shampoo to use, though she doesn’t like it very much. Big pink curlers and coke cans to curl her hair in a nice manner, are stashed in her bathroom.
(FIVE) — Letters she’s written to Severus in a shoe box in a high shelf in the corner of her closet since the fall out. Lily is a big letter writer sort of person. There are also things in the shoebox that remind her of her and Severus’ friendship. She’s thought about burying it, but she just can’t help to keep adding to the marvelous collection. There are parts of their friendship everywhere, and because she refuses to properly deal with the loss of friend the way one would if someone died (not that it’s the same, though sometimes it feels that way to her) — it just keeps filling and filling. All she wants to do is move on. All she wants to do it move on. and maybe, she will. But there will always be a part of her that will remember the boy who told her who she was — and that moment she’ll never forget. This is something Lily doesn’t quite realize yet, so she keeps on adding to the collection in hopes that how she feels will just go away.
