@frankengeeks gets a starter
steve isn't sure what to expect when he hears the knock on the door, figures maybe it's nancy - she's been by to check on him periodically after well ... everything. what he's definitely not expecting to see is the chief standing there, with a kid next to him. and there's something about the kid that he can't quite put his finger on, she looks so familiar.
hop asks if his parents are home, steve gives a shrug and says they left last week - he doesn't know when they'll be back. hopper seems to hesitate for a moment after that, glancing at the girl and then back to steve - almost like he's having an internal debate - before finally ... he launches into an explanation.
and steve well, steve sure as hell isn't expecting this - eyes widening throughout hopper's explanation - gaze eventually shifting to the girl (jane - it's jane) unable to tear his eyes away from her. he's pretty sure at some point he grips the doorway for support. once hopper finally finishes his explanation, he grows quiet - stepping back a little, seemingly giving the two siblings a moment.
steve's still staring at her, trying to come up with something to say, on the precipice of a thousand different emotions. she's smaller, so much smaller than he'd expected her to be, but the longer he looks at her the more he can see the family resemblance. she favors their mother far more than he does, though the eyes are almost the same as his own staring right back at him. he's never given up hope that she was out there somewhere, seeing jonathan and will reunite - while he'd been happy for them, it had also killed him inside a little ... but now. now she's here. she's finally here.
he crouches down a little, to her level, sucking in a breath - unable to stop the tears from welling up in his eyes. "jane. hi." voice comes out almost impossibly soft. "it ... it's so good to finally meet you, kid. i've been waiting a real long time." breath hitches, he isn't sure what to do. what move to make, what she'll be most comfortable with ... so hesitantly he holds a hand out to her. "i'm steve. i'm your brother."
