John Frankenheimer killed with this film, destroyed. “Seconds” is amazing and still as good, if not better, than any psychological horror film released since. I feel like Jordan Peele would agree, Jordan Peele obviously knows his shit. “Seconds” would make a great double feature with the also amazing “Get Out.”

According to legend, this is the film that Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys saw in 1966 while attempting to record the legendary unfinished album “Smile.” 

Brian was in the studio one night recording part of his “Elements” suite for said album. He was a method musician and was in the midst of recording the “Fire” segment. He was burning wood in trash cans in the studio, the session musicians were asked to wear fire department helmets, the “Fire” piece is intense:

After the session Brian went to the movie house and saw “Seconds.” 

While he was at the movies, the recording studio burned down. After that Brian was spooked, he was convinced the government was watching him. Now, Brian had a lot going on at that time, he was experimenting with musical forms and psychedelic drugs, still, “Seconds” could make any sensitive person paranoid.

Rock Hudson brilliantly plays the tragic main character. He’s sad, approaching the end of his life and all of a sudden being followed by some young stranger. After a tense pursuit the stranger reveals that he is an old friend that’s been given a second chance at life, at youth, and that Rock can have that too.

After much contemplation our tragic hero takes the bait. He undergoes an intense surgery.

He is given a new identity, new life, new love interest, new experiences.

The intensity of being a youth during the sexually free and turbulent 60′s, just on the verge of the hippie movement, proves to be a bit too much for Rock. 

So he decides to go back to his old identity and live his life out normally. The novelty had worn off, being young again was fun but not for him...

Not so fast man.

Too many people are involved here, too many illegal things done, too many surgeries, too much at stake to let the cat out of the bag. No tag backs man, no tag backs, you must not realize how deep you are in this shit.

You gotta feel for the guy, he was pretty innocent, tragic, pure. “Seconds” is a beautiful, surreal, paranoid tragedy. The rest of the film and all it reveals is genuinely disturbing. Bravo Mr. Frankenheimer and Mr. Hudson. “Seconds” was truly ahead of its time.
