(We’re gonna skip the rest of the car ride because I think we’ve spent enough time in the back of a Tesla)
“Alright, bitches we’re here! File out!” Ethan yells, jolting me awake.
You look up to realize your head fell onto Grayson’s shoulder and he must’ve fallen asleep too because his head was rested on yours. When you move away, Grayson sits up straighter and you awkwardly look at each other, seeing as the two of you haven’t talked since the gas station.
“Go ahead,” Grayson finally says, grabbing your things and pushing out of the cramped backseat, your feet crunching under the frozen ground.
You take a deep breath of the crisp air and close your eyes. Listening to the sound of nature for a moment, letting it ground you.
“Alright Ms. Yogi let’s go,” Ryan pats your shoulder and you open my eyes, rolling them at him and walking over to the trunk.
Grayson pulls your bag out wordlessly, dropping it next to his on the ground. When you go to pick it up he stops you, “I got it,” he mutters, walking away with our bags before you can protest.
You sigh and begrudgingly trudge up the front steps of the large house that was modeled to look like a log cabin after him. Ethan unlocks the front door as you look around the front porch, the large bay windows giving us a sneak-peek of the inside and we all file in. You stop in awe and look around and the beautiful cabin.
There’s a large open living room with a beautiful stainless-steel kitchen, a large bar/island separates the two rooms but keeps the open-flow going. There’s a stone fireplace and a fur rug that looks softer than your bed. Big, brown leather couches and love-seats are placed facing each other, a glass and dark-oak coffee table between them. There’s a flat-screen tv on the mantle. Almost the whole back wall of the house is windows, showing the lake and wooden balcony, stone steps leading down to a grill, pool, hot tub, and a rolling yard.
“How many rooms are there in this place?”
“How expensive is this?”
“Holy shit! Did y’all see the pool?”
“Look at this kitchen!”
“There’s free TV! They have Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and Amazon Prime!”
“Everyone gather around!” Ethan yells, silencing all the excited questions and murmurs.
We all walk over to the island, four of us sitting on the stools and Grayson and Ethan stand across from us.
“I know some of you were wondering about prices,” Ethan pauses, looking at Grayson for a second, “But this place is completely free because well- it’s ours.”
“Wait- what?” You don’t even realize you said that out loud, looking at them with wide eyes and an open mouth. Grayson catches a flash of hurt in your eyes- knowing it’s because they didn’t tell you.
“Yeah, our parents bought it awhile back as a vacation house so they could come stay and visit us and everyone but- now that Dads gone ma doesn’t come out here as much as she used to so- we wanted to bring all are friends up here to get in some use,” Grayson finally speaks up, looking at you the whole time, hoping you don’t get upset with him for not telling you.
Your brows furrow and you blink at him, “And you never told me?” Your small voice might’ve been quiet but it silenced all the other chatting. Everyone looked between you and Grayson, you and Grayson, whom you’re now stuck in a staring contest with.
“I think I’m going to check out that backyard,” Ethan announces, trying to get away from the tension.
Everyone else agrees, following him out the back French double doors. You continue to look at Grayson wordlessly and he breaks first, looking down at the counter and sighing. “I wanted to tell you,” his voice is quiet but you can hear him perfectly.
“Really? How could you- you kept an entire house from me, Grayson. I can’t believe I ever thought we were best friends,” you laugh, voice cracking.
Grayson’s head shoots up and he looks at you with furrowed brows and pleading eyes, “You were- you are my best friend! We didn’t tell anyone! No one knew about this place except for family!”
I scoff, glancing to the backyard, “So, Kristina didn’t know? She had no idea?” Grayson stays silent and I look back at him, knowing the answer.
“She’s Ethans girlfriend! Of course, she knew. Ma invited her out here once and-“ he stops when he sees your face.
“Of course she did,” you couldn’t help but chuckle mirthlessly, eyes watering slightly, “and she never once asked you to bring me?” You know the answer. Grayson’s head drops back down and that’s your confirmation, “What is it? Huh? Was that too much for you, Grayson? Did you think that by bringing me here to hang out with your family and your brother and his girlfriend you’d feel like you were being pressured into dating me? Because God forbid you think of me as more than a friend,” you throw your hands up in the air, exasperated beyond belief. Standing up you glare at him.
“That- no! God, no. Listen, y/n, I don’t know what’s going on with me, but as of recently” his voice is panicked, “I don’t know! I always saw you as my best friend. My platonic soulmate but over the past few months I’ve- I’ve noticed things about you. Things I never noticed before and they make me feel all weird and warm and I can’t stop thinking about you! And it scared me. I’m scared that I’m going to hurt you! Because I don’t know what’s going on with me but now I’m kissing you at gas stations and getting pissed off at seeing you and Ryan just talking!” He rambles and you look at him with wide eyes.
“Grayson- you-“ you look up at him and walk around the island, standing in front of him, “you hurt me more by not talking to me. The only way this,” you gesture to the two of you, “has ever worked is because we’ve always told each other everything. I should’ve told you a long time ago how I felt about you, and you should’ve told me how you were feeling as of recently. Maybe this wouldn’t have been so-“ you run a hand through your hair, looking for a word to sum up the mess you’re in.
“Fucked,” Grayson states simply and you laugh, a smile spreading on his lips at the sound.
“Yeah,” you smile back, “Totally fucked.”
“I know we have so much more to talk about and to fix but- for right now, can we please just go back to being best friends? Not forgetting everything that’s happened but we’ll just,” he smiles as he references the childhood movie he used to make you watch all the time as he gestures to putting a pin in a board, “put a pin in it?”
You roll your eyes, a matching smile on your lips. You know the smart thing to do would be to say no, have the talk right then and there but your heart- and your legs, for a matter-of-fact, can’t handle that right now, “Okay, bestiee.”
He makes a strangled noise in his throat at the nickname and pulls you in for a hug. You close your eyes, wrapping your arms around his neck as his arms go around your waist. You squeeze his neck a little and he reciprocates with a squeeze to your waist. Smiling into the hug, you take a deep breath. Grayson’s woodsey, outdoor, summer smell paired with his warmth is enough to make you feel calm and ready to face the world.
“I missed you,” Grayson whispers as you pull away from each other slowly.
“I missed you too,” you whisper back, smiling up at him.
You falter, realizing how close you are. Your hands are still around his neck, his still encircled around your waist.
And before you know it, for the second time in your life, you’re saying fuck friendship, and making out with Grayson Dolan.
