I just finished reading Kissing Windows by blackbeardskneebrace and i might actually die if i don't talk about it immediately. i am vibrating. i am a shell of a person. i am staring at the wall and the wall is staring back. if you like hilson and you aren't reading this yet, what are you even doing??
okay but seriously the vibe is just unreal. it reads like a YA slowburn published novel and i love it so much. it’s that perfect mix of characters i already know but in this totally fresh style that still feels so accurate to the source. it’s giving me major nostalgia—it’s so reminiscent of stories i read growing up, like Handful of Stars or Space Case. just that specific kind of storytelling that grips you and doesn't let go.
The Research: you can tell the author is in grad school because the medical history is top-tier. the 1982 atmosphere is so thick you could cut it with a scalpel.
The Characterization: young house is so insufferable and perfect. they sound exactly like themselves, which is so rare to find in a new style.
The Slow Burn: the way they look at each other through the windows??? i am literally in the trenches.
The Nostalgia: it feels like the best parts of my childhood reading list grew up with me.
anyway i’m going to be thinking about this for the next 3-5 business years. the author says they're in their saturn return so i'm sending them all the energy to keep going because this fic is my baby now. go read it so we can scream together!!
