Makeup Artistry and "The Deadly Years," Part Two Even once the appliances had been made and the makeup process for the aging sequences were worked out, there were still some rough days ahead, not only for Fred Phillips and his shang-haid makeup crew, but for the cast members who had to endure many hours in the makeup chair. Sarah Marshall recollected being surprised that when she showed up for makeup on her first day of filming and saw DeForrest, Bill, and Jimmy already in the chairs. Usually women had to come to work an hour and a half earlier to have their makeup applied before filming began while the men only needed an hour at the most. (except for Nimoy, of course, on this show). DeForest Kelley noted he spent his half his day there being worked on by three people before finally going in front of the camera. Shatner was more than a little annoyed when he had to go through the process of being aged only to find out that Justman had decided he didn't need Shatner for the scene that day. Supposedly after that, Justman hid from Shatner as much as possible until they were finished shooting. Despite all the hard work and annoyances, this episode remains very popular among Trek fans and a large part of that can be attributed to the meticulous work of Fred Phillips and crew. Even twenty years later, Fred Westmore would use production stills of DeForest Kelley in "The Deadly Years" to create the much older Bones in TNG.

A Betelgusian, a Vulcan, and a Zaranite, all wearing costumes created by Robert Fletcher for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Fletcher and his team worked with Trek makeup veteran Fred Phillips to create dozens of costumes and aliens that were barely in the picture at all. 

At the time of filming, it was estimated that the Betelgusian’s ensemble, made entirely from fabric collected from the Paramount Studios storerooms, was the most expensive ever worn by a movie extra. 

It was worth “around $10,000″ according to Fletcher. That comes out to around $37,000 in 2017.
