Ljungberg was Arteta’s assistant during the second-half of the 2019-20 season but has left Arsenal ahead of the new campaign to ‘progress his management experience’. Sweden hero Ljungberg enjoyed a special relationship with a number of Arsenal academy players, including Saka, who enjoyed a breakthrough season at the Emirates. Arsenal fans were over the moon after the core of Mikel Arteta’s backroom staff was announced by the club. It was announced Freddie Ljungberg, Steve Round, Inaki Cana Pavon and Albert Stuivenberg will be the four men to directly assist the Spaniard (via Arsenal). ‘Players get away with too much’ - Jamie Redknapp suggests Arteta’s AFC priority is not results

Jamie Redknapp insists new Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta’s immediate task at the club will be to improve the culture at the Emirates Stadium after calling out two high-profile incidents this season. Arteta was confirmed as the Gunners’ new boss on Friday as they look to improve their season’s fortunes which has seen their former captain Granit Xhaka stripped of the armband, while Mesut Ozil showed his petulance after getting substituted in their recent defeat to Manchester City. Meanwhile, on the pitch, the club endured their worst run of form for decades. Writing in the Daily Mail, Redknapp suggests that Arteta’s most important role will be to change the culture at the club before getting to grips with more footballing matters. He said: “Could you imagine Granit Xhaka doing what he did towards Arsenal fans, or Mesut Ozil kicking his gloves in anger, if Pep Guardiola or Jurgen Klopp were in charge at Arsenal? No, me neither. “Players get away with too much at that club and new manager Mikel Arteta has a culture problem to solve. “Arteta talked about being ‘ruthless’ at his unveiling on Friday evening and that is what he has to be.” While there may be tasks of this nature for Arteta to deal with, the fact that Xhaka’s antics led to him being dropped as captain, while Freddie Ljungberg insisted he would have dropped the injured Ozil for the visit to Goodison Park suggests that players are duly punished for their misdemeanours. That they occur is perhaps more of an issue, though Arteta has been brought in to improve the fortunes that took a sharp downturn under Unai Emery – so the Spaniard may not be seeking Redknapp’s advice. It could be argued that poor results were contributory factors towards Xhaka’s frustrations with the fans boiling over as well as Ozil’s kicking-out on his gloves after being hauled off in their tepid performance against the champions over a week ago. So perhaps Arteta could kill two birds with one stone – or three if you count Redknapp’s groaning – by leading Arsenal to success as their new boss. ‘It’s a big mess’ - Bacary Sagna thinks Arsenal should have kept hold of Unai Emery

Former Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna has criticised the club’s lack of planning with no news of a permanent successor to Unai Emery weeks after his dismissal. Emery was sacked in late November after Arsenal had gone seven games without a win and dropped well out of contention to claim a Champions League place. However, interim boss Freddie Ljungberg took three games to return the Gunners to winning ways and has just one victory from his five matches in charge. Speaking on Sky Sports as Arsenal were outplayed by champions Manchester City, Sagna blasted the club’s owners for their lack of organisation and their handling of the matter. He said (via Daily Mail): “Unless you have someone in mind, you shouldn’t be firing a manager without having a replacement. “We have owners we never see. You never know what’s going to happen. “They got rid of Unai Emery and didn’t have a plan. It’s a big mess. They need to find the right manager.” While plans to secure a successor seemed to escalate overnight as Gunners officials were reportedly snapped leaving a meeting with ex-midfielder Mikel Arteta, it has now been over two weeks since Emery was sacked with little change of fortunes under Ljungberg, who called on the board to take decisive action. Although Ljungberg may now be getting his wish, the club had suggested that their search for a new manager would be thorough, while previous reports had indicated the club would be happy for the Swede to hold the fort until the successful candidate had been identified. Arsenal’s board may therefore be in a catch-22 situation, with the alternative that Sagna suggests being to keep faith with Emery despite the drastic downturn of results that would otherwise have warranted a sacking. Perhaps the Gunners hierarchy should have prepared for that eventuality – or perhaps Ljungberg was their backup plan all along. Either way, the lack of noise until recently has had Arsenal heading towards an abyss that has left their season in disarray and Sagna in understandable frustration. Aubameyang, Lacazette and Martinelli all start: Potential Arsenal XI vs Man City - Opinion

Arsenal head into a huge clash with champions Manchester City, fresh from securing their first league win since October against West Ham. The Gunners were 1-0 down at half-time, but second half-strikes from Gabriel Martinelli, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nicolas Pepe secured all three points, their first win under interim boss Freddie Ljungberg. City arrive at the Emirates off the back of a crushing defeat in the Manchester derby, a performance that has potentially given Arsenal the blueprint to beating Pep Guardiola’s men. The Gunners do have injury issues, though. Hector Bellerin was injured before the win at the London Stadium while Kieran Tierney was replaced during their victory at the London Stadium. So how will they lineup? Ainsley Maitland-Niles is the obvious choice at right-back if Bellerin remains sidelined. Sead Kolasinac steps into the void left by Tierney. Calum Chambers and Sokratis make up a back four that kept the Hammers out for the second half in that recent victory. A change of system may be required to help combat the incisive City midfield. Lucas Torreira should retain his spot but could do with the help of combative Frenchman Matteo Guendouzi as Granit Xhaka looks set to miss out with concussion. He’s made 24 tackles for the Gunners this season, tied with Xhaka for the most in the squad. He was also impressive in his debut against the same opponents last season. In attack, Arsenal could throw a lot of firepower to try and exploit a fragile City defence. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is their top scorer, his 11 league goals are more than double of anyone else in the squad. Alexandre Lacazette could replace Mesut Ozil. His performance against West Ham drew criticism from the fans, leaving a lot to be desired.
