Frederick Opper (1857-1937) "Down Wid Toyrunts! No More Irish Paupers Wanted In The U.S." William Randolph Hearst's "New York Journal." c. 1885
Irish on the east coast, Chinese on the west, there’s always been someone to resent. This is FoxNews, late 19th C.
Happy Hooligan Hearst
April 9, 1904
Thomas Taggart beats William Hearst up for trying to get cozy with Aunty Democracy, while Brother Gus Parker propositions Aunty in the corner. Brother Montmorency Bryan chastises Hearst as well.
The caption reads "Brother Montmorency Bryan was just introducing him to Aunty Democracy when the policeman butted in." The signature in the corner reads “ Apologies to F. Opper”
The cartoon is a reference to the Democratic party at the time, Hearst had just failed to capture any delegates in the Democratic primary in Indiana, where Taggart was political boss. Alton B. Parker instead took the delegates. The cartoon is in the style of the comic strip Happy Hooligan, by Frederick Opper.
